DJ AM's Death -- Not a Suicide

8/31/2009 1:20 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

DJ AMLaw enforcement sources directly connected with the death of DJ AM tell us that his death was the result of an accidental overdose and not a suicide -- and there is a tragic, ironic twist of fate.

Our sources say DJ AM, a recovering addict, developed a dependency to Xanax and other benzodiazepines (a group of drugs used to treat anxiety) as a direct result of the plane crash a year ago. We're told AM (aka Adam Goldstein) developed a tremendous anxiety over flying -- something he had to do frequently for his job.

We're told doctors began prescribing Xanax and other anti-anxiety medications to relieve his fear, but the benzos triggered a relapse into addiction. We're told benzos are particularly dicey for recovering addicts.

Our sources say DJ AM's relapse was "recent" -- he was not abusing for a prolonged period of time before his death.

We're also told the OD had "absolutely nothing to do with his recent breakup."

Our sources say the evidence strongly indicates cause of death will be a combination of crack cocaine and benzos.

This is going to be another Michael Jackson type situation. He was a known drug addict an doctor who would prescribe meds for him HAD to know to watch him. The amount of doctors who are 'friendly' prescribers is shocking, so i'm not surprised to see another fallen star.

It's sad, but doctors don't get the proper education on drug addicts, so they don't see the signs of an addict who is drug seeking. If someone had been keeping an eye on Adam, this may not have happened.

RIP DJ AM!!!!

Addiction is neither a DISEASE or CONDITION - it is simply the excuse of a weak person who lacks any will power.

yes things are addictive, but it is the person who chooses what they do to themselves, not some inanimate object.

I despise how addiction is used as justification for just about anything these days. . .

This american culture is known historically as being the 'blame someone else' society, with citizens who religiously pop pills to take care of their problems, then pull out the addiction card when things get 'dicey.' There is no "life sucks" pill that will make it all better, sorry.

Why don't you join us in the 20th century, honesty? Addiction is indeed a disease; it is a dysfunction of brain chemicals, clinically proven.
I recommend you don't say this in public; there are too many addicts out there that have undergone tremendous suffering because of it. Many of those you call out as having no will power have struggled for years to get clean, and comments like yours are just stupid.

Hey Diva, i got a vacation spot you should check out, it's called the
Crymea River, its a great place.

Life is struggle, and we each have our own demons to deal with.
Addicts use the terminology of addiction as an excuse to justify horrible behaviours, and people like you enable it because you believe the BS.

Hey, and here's a thought for ya - - -

Maybe if we didn't prescribe children mind-altering drugs, they wouldn't struggle for years with addiction to mind-altering substances.

But then, people in this country would actually have to get off their fat, drug addicted asses and do some real parenting, heaven forbid!

It's sad, but how come all these celebrities don't realize that when you combine a bunch of prescription drugs, and crack and other things, you are doing something dangerous that could kill you. Just because something has a prescription label on it doesn't mean it was obtained legally and it doesn't mean the drugs can be mixed endlessly with other drugs. These people were committing suicide by doing these drugs in combination. People can't just continue to play dumb and believe a ridiculous mix of drugs like crack and xanax and whatever else they throw in will never kill them- it will. The only reason it's called an accidental overdose is for publicity reasons and so their families can collect on their life insurance policies, which don't pay for suicide deaths.

Crack cocaine, known as crack, is the term for the smokable form of cocaine. Crack is the street name given to the form of cocaine that has been processed into a smokable substance. Smoking crack cocaine delivers large quantities of the drug to the lungs, producing an immediate and intense euphoric feeling. The rush, or high is usually very intense, but does not last very long. The rocks of crack cocaine are ignited in a crack pipe and the ensuing vapors get deeply inhaled. Crack cocaine emerged as a major drug of abuse in the past twenty to twenty-five years. The term crack refers to the popping sound heard when it is heated. Cocaine addiction or crack cocaine addiction is usually identified with a person who is compulsively seeking and using cocaine or crack cocaine, despite the negative consequences. The physical signs of cocaine abuse can vary, depending on the person. For one, cocaine acts as an appetite suppressant so cocaine abusers often aren't hungry and end up losing considerable amounts of weight. Cocaine addicts often go on binges, sometimes for several days. The path to cocaine addiction can begin with occasional use only at parties. Over time, a person's ability to choose not to take the drug gradually erodes. Cocaine or crack cocaine addiction becomes compulsive and addictive because of the ensuing pleasurable feelings.

Addiction is a choice. People choose to get addicted to drugs and alcohol and most of the time it's to "escape life". Try being a kid going through Alcoholics Anonymous and seeing all the BS that goes on with it. How the drunks are praised and treated like celebrities within their "clubs" and the family members are treated like crap.

Americans alone drink millions of gallons worth of coffee each year. Is this a disease?

Seriously, enough with the "alcoholism/drug abuse is a disease" crap cause this is spewed by doctors who make money off of this supposed disease with their rehab clinics, and medications.

i for one have never been a drinker or a drug person, but my parents for most of my life were alcoholics and i swore when i became of age that i would never put myself in that position of doing the very thing i hated comming from both of my parents. i am sure everyone has there own way of dealing with stress and pain, it just takes alot of will power and prayer. my prayers go to anyone who has had to deal with this problem or having someone in there family that has been inflicted to this terrible disease. sue from tampa

MP, i fully agree - - -

I knew someone who was mentally unstable - eventually she had a full-blown psychotic episode in front of a hospital - completely lost all touch with reality. She was released 5 weeks later, and had a hard time coming to terms with the ordeal. She started seeking out other plausible causes for her breakdown other than her mental disorder, so she went to AA. The people there convinced her that the whole thing was due to drinking. Mind you, she didn't drink, and was just wanting to believe something other than the truth.

Over the course of the next year though, the recovering drunks at AA ate it up, sharing their stories of hospitalizations with her and told her she didn't needs to take her meds anymore. They told her she was false-diagnosed, claiming that it happens in AA all the time. Her family members and friends were vilified as 'people who don't understand.' She stopped seeing a psychiatrist when she legally did not have to see one anymore, and she turned her back on everyone she knew prior to AA, even her brother.
