Most Famous Photog Ever -- Imagine Losing It All

9/6/2009 11:15 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

In the world of high-end photography, Annie Leibovitz's portfolio is the equivalent of The Beatles' catalog -- and she's in danger of losing it all.

Annie Leibovitz, John Lennon, Yoko Ono

Leibovitz, who took the infamous last photo of John Lennon before he was assassinated, is facing catastrophic financial problems -- if she doesn't pay back a $24 million loan by Tuesday, she'll lose the rights to every big photo she's ever taken. The list includes that controversial Miley Cyrus photo from last year, the pregnant Demi Moore Vanity Fair cover, the cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run" -- and really every interesting VF cover for the last 20 years or so.

In classic Michael Jackson-esque form, Leibovitz sunk deep into debt and then got a loan using her photo catalog (estimated at $40 million) and homes as collateral.

Tuesday is D-Day.

She is in debt because she lived the lifestyle of the rich and famous people she photographs even though she did not have that kind of income. Happens all the time with writers and photographers. If she hadn't put her portfolio up as collateral, she would not be in danger of losing it. Her sense of entitlement and lavish way of life have finally caught up to her. She needs to sell her stuff and settle her debt. And then be damn grateful that she still has a job at Vanity fair that pays two million a year. She has three young children to care for. Time for a reality check Annie.

John Lennon wasn't assassinated. He was murdered. Nobody hired Mark Chapman to do it.

Things in life always happen for us all to teach or learn. This is a good example of never pawning what is treasured most. Living on credit will always bite ya in the a**! If it had value to her she should have held on tightly. Bad decision, but it was her decision. No sorrow over this action. It is choice, followed by consequences.

AND Photographs are not Art???.. they are just being at the right place at the right time with a camera..and knowing when to push the shutter button. Today we call them Paparazzi!!

Cry me a river--life is all about taking responsibility for your actions and accepting consequences...Like another posting said, how many millions of Americans can't afford health care or lost their jobs or their homes? I have no pity for the wealthy who carelessly squandered or mismanaged their millions...

True. One lesbian could give the other lesbian the money and not even notice it's gone. It's like... if Oprah dropped $100, it wouldn't be worth her while to bend her (cow ass) over to pick it up.

So what's up, Annie??? You heavy into COKE?! Either drugs or a hardcore gambler.

#25: So I guess the Kennedys weren't assassinated either, as there has never been any proof of their alleged killers being hired by anyone.

I never pictured Ms. Leibovitz as a materialistic person. Guess I was wrong!!! What a shame... I truly hope that she can pull things together and maintain control of her work. Maybe Sir Paul McCartney could help her out. After all, he fully understands the pain of losing control of your art. We've all enjoyed her work over the years, wish her well...
