Washington Redskins -- The Supreme Challenge

9/15/2009 11:30 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Washington Redskins -- The Supreme ChallengeThe war over the Washington Redskins -- the most offensive team name in professional sports -- might finally go to the U.S. Supreme Court.

A group of American Indians is asking the highest court in the land to cancel the trademarks on the Redskins team name and logos -- due to the fact that they're extremely defamatory toward Native Americans.

The American Indian group has been fighting this battle since 1992. They won a ruling in 1999 ... but the decision was defeated soon after by judges who decided they waited too long to bring their case to the courts.

The Redskins -- worth a reported $1.5 billion -- have been using the name since 1933.

Now, the Native American group wants SCOTUS to review the lower court decision -- and finally force Washington to understand why naming an NFL team after the color of someone's skin could be offensive.

Cancel the name, yes. The image is based on racial division, so get rid of that too. It would go a long way to responsibly advance the intelligence of a still-racist nation, if we could put Sitting Bull or Crazy Horse or some major aboriginal historical figure on a major item such as the $20, or a major monument in Washington or something that makes a major statement. It would be a start.

The degenerates who run the media wouldn't advocate that, and they too need their noses rubbed in some bad bad bad.

I think the Native Americans are in the right here. Old stereotypes from the past should be dismantled, and sometimes they are very subversive. It's not the same as being called Vikings, or African Americans as others pointed out. It's like having a team called the San Franscisco YellowSkins, and having a Chinese man wearing the China Hat in the logo. OR the Detroit Blackfaces with a picture of a black man with a big afro on the logo.

It's very easy for someone who is NOT of Native American decent to tell someone who is what should or shouldn't offend them. Always some white person telling minorities how they should feel about being demeaned and/or discriminated against. Always some white person telling minorities what they should and shouldn't "get over".
If you don't agree with Native Americans filing the suit, fine. But what you all need to do is STOP WITH THE HIGH AND MIGHTY ATTITUDE IN THINKING YOU'RE ALWAYS RIGHT IN TELLING ANOTHER GROUP WHAT SHOULD OR SHOULDN'T OFFEND THEM. IT'S NOT YOUR CALL.
Perhaps if YOUR ancestors hadn't been such thieves, murders, and rapists, the Washington Redskins would be known today as the Washington Crackers. Yeah, doesn't sound so good when it's demeaning to YOU...

Not offensive....what if a team was called the Nashville Negroes, or the Jacksonville Jews....probably wouldn't fly would it. racism against native americans is the last accepted form of racism.

#43---ignorance at its finest. I guess you think you're "clever" and could care less how many people you offend by your words. Never mind you have minorities serving this country making sure you have the rights you so easily throw around. I'm sure you've never served anything more than a drink. Pathetic!

Being part Native American myself, I think this is crap. Teams are named after things that are tough, but all of this drama about team names shows just how wussy some people can be. My 1/2 Iroquois grandfather always told me, "Don't be a pale face!" It was a joke, never to be taken seriously.

It's not an insult, it's a compliment. I've never seen a team named after a parakeet. Grow up and move on. There are more important battles to fight.

#33 you are very wrong! I just went twice this weekend to the pow wow here in Grand Rapids, MI with the 3 fires tribes (Pottawatomie, Ojibwe and Ottawa) and they had tents with END THE RACISM propaganda with Tshirts and info about banning mascots and Native American stereotypes.
