Crash Victims to 'Dr. Phil' Show -- Give Us a Brake

9/29/2009 1:55 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Dr. PhilFive "Dr. Phil" fans are now suing the very show they once loved -- after a road trip to catch a taping of the program allegedly turned into the worst experience of their lives.

Flashback to December 2007, when a bus chartered by the "Dr. Phil" show -- which was carting members of a Ventura County mothers group to see the show -- crashed while en route, injuring 17 people.

According to the lawsuit, filed earlier this month in L.A. County Superior Court, the brakes on the bus "failed and lost power, making the bus unable to stop" ... causing it to collide with "another vehicle, two concrete curbs, an iron fence and two trees."

Now, five women on board that bus are suing Dr. Phil's production company, claiming the show "negligently hired" the faulty bus to pick them up.

The five women are asking for unspecified damages against Dr. Phil's production company -- Peteski Productions -- along with Bus America, Inc. and the bus driver.

Typical stay at home, overweight, welfare drawing american looking for a free payday. How about going out and getting a job like the rest of us. Surprising the ambulance chasing lawyer stopped with Dr. Phil, they could have included the manufacturer of the bus, the highway department, Oprah "as she was the one who started Dr. Phil". This case is pathetic.

I don't know if Dr. Phil's production company can be sued over this, but I am pretty sure that the bus company can. He did pay for the bus transportation, but he didn't want or expect this to happen. I have seen a few episodes of both Judge Judy and the People's Court and I do know that Judge Milian has ruled that the plaintiff had to go sue another party instead of the one that they were suing because that party was just the middleman. I had seen a People's Court case over a man's trip to Sicily and she ruled that he had to sue another party in Sicily because the defendant was just the middleman. I live in Maryland and have never been to California (I only have been as far west as Colorado), so I don't know California law.

I'm sorry your family was hurt in the accident but seriously! Sue the bus company for the accident. Dr. Phil or his show didn't purposely go out and look for a bus that didn't have brakes. COME ON! How can you look at yourselves in the mirror when you know you are wrong. It's your "money ticket".

This is a glaring example of the idiocy of our court system. Nobody made these folks get on the damn bus in the first place! Okay, so maybe they should have any medical bills covered, but anything else is just greedy and over the top. Why are they suing Dr. Phil? Any failure to do safety checks would be the responsibility of the bus company. Its a shame that so many people are looking for a free ride on someone else's back. What ever happened to personal responsibilty???
