MJ Camp -- It Ain't Just Michael's Song

10/12/2009 7:25 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

John Branca, the special administrator for Michael Jackson's estate tells TMZ Paul Anka is right -- "This Is It" was not written by MJ alone, it was co-written with Paul Anka.

Paul Anka

Branca and his people are negotiating a settlement with Paul Anka's lawyer.

Branca tells TMZ, "We acknowledge that Michael and Paul wrote this song together."

As we first reported, the other special administrator, John McClain, told Anka "We'll give you whatever you want, whatever it takes we'll do the right thing."

To the poster who claimes MJ couldn't have written any songs because he didn't play an instrument and couldn't read sheet music, you obviously don't realize that some of the best composers of popular music in the last half of the 20th Century did not know how to read music. Someone mentioned Lennon & McCartney, but there are many, many others. And most of the ones legendary on their instruments, like guitarists, etc., do not know how to read music either. They play by ear and their talent is intuitive. Most taught themselves to play and write songs, and had no formal training.

If you can write lyrics and sing a capella, then you can write a song. The aspects of a song that are copyrightable, with rare exceptions, are the words and the melody line. MJ knew how to do much more than that, however.

As mentioned by another poster, he was often sued for copyright violations - others claiming they had written the songs first, like "Dangerous," but MJ always prevailed in those law suits.

Anka should get half of the songwriting royalities on this, and his publishing company should also split with MJ's - and there are different kinds of royalties, too.

Why didn't Anka's attorney just go to McClain/Branca and Sony with this issue privately, instead of creating an unnecessary stir?

TMZ, this sensationalism is unnecessary.

IF SO, WAS THIS ALSO "PREMEDITATED" TO DRAIN THE ESTATE??????

IT'S TIME TO CHECK OUT THE VALIDITY OF THE WILL!!!!!

I agree regarding the posts about Michael being the brilliant composer that he is despite not have the skill to read and write sheet music-- studying to read and write sheet music doesnt make one a musical genius. Its the opposite-

NOT having formally studied that skill and YET being able to compose one of the best if not the best songs of all time, songs that the whole world appreciates and buys MAKES ONE A GENIUS.

That is one of the reason Michael Jackson is called a GENIUS. He never lets his shortcomings get in the way, like his vitiligo and his lupus, he worked around it and became THE BIGGEST, THE MOST SUCCESSFUL and THE MOST FAMOUS CELEBRITY ON PLANET EARTH (thats according to Guinness)

Im sure this issue is just Anka asking for his share for the This is It song he CO-WROTE with Michael Jackson, but Paul should have done away with the sensational remarks because its so obvious Michael doesnt deserve this and Michael did NOT steal anything here. Paul said so that they wrote this song together, its Sony who bypassed Paul Anka and thats not Michael's fault at all.

VERY WELL STATED!!

Where life handed Michael LEMONS, he made LEMONDADE -- turning his skin condition into his signature GLOVED HAND, and turning his lost childhood into the spectacular Neverland!!!!

HE WAS PURE GENIUS!!!!!

61. Of course Michael Jackson co-wrote this with Paul Anka, I knew that story from way back when! I didnt realize Michael recorded his version because the version they gave to that singer Safire, I didnt like the way Safire sang it. But when I heard this Michael Jackson version---the song really sounds great with a great recall factor in it. For that I applaud Jackson and Anka! 2 GENIUSES making a song--what more can you ask for? The song is great.

Michael Jackson actually composed many songs under a pseudonym because he wasn't allowed to use his name outside Sony Music projects for many many years. I was actually surprised to read that Michael Jackson also COMPOSED my favorite Simpson's song "DO THE BARTMAN" and this was confirmed by the producer of the Simpsons. He said Michael was not allowed to use his name outside Sony projects so they used a pseudonym. Thats why on that Simpson's episode, it wasnt Mike singing Man in the Mirror. His exclusive contract with Sony did not allow him to sing for that.

Well Bravo to Anka and Jackson, I like the song!

OMG!!!When was Paul Anka in the news lately. Oh today of course. No No Michael Jackson isn't to blame he is gone. But aren't they releasing This is it being writin by MJ and finished by McClain. So SONY & McClain should be sued out of there own pockets--Mr. Paul Anka apoligize to the deceased family and redirect your lawsuit toward Sony & McMlain--Just maybe you'll own the other half of sony then you and MJJ would be 50/50. All problems solved. MJ didn't write his songs on paper I believe he recorded them on tape recorders. Research.

here, I can see those who has killed MJ. PA is not the one goig to dance and makes some show for us. And even if they have written the song together he knew (PA) that he will only get the % which will income for the words written with MJ and not for anything else like a show. So killing MJ will be better than keeping him alive for any arrangement. I can agree that something shall be given to him but not the 50 % as announced. The thief and murder here is PA. The other one is no more in life to express himself and he has to respect that. He knew that he is organizing himself to make some show so how didn't PA asked for something before MJ has died ??????

Paul Anka has had a long, successful career in the music business. He is not hurting for money, and there has never been a scandal about him.

this should be a good indicator that Someone trustworthy from the Jackson family needs to be in on what happens and or decisions made, how prof could these guys be?to publish something first then give 50%of it up? did the JACKSON FAMILY know anka co-wrote this sht? did Branca make full disclosure? seems alittle embarrassing to me,why not take the professional route guys and do the decent thing and disclose your actions first,so MJ's name doesn't become fodder? i still want to know what association stands with anka and Branca and Mcclain? when was the last time he had money coming in,and did this co-write just make him a deal he hasnt seen in yrs? idk just askin

To the IDIOT who said Michael couldn't read sheet music. UHHHH YES HE CAN. The man played the piano, the drums and the guitar, lol you have to know how to read sheet music to play at least the piano. Michael composed all of his songs and he was actually getting ready to release a classical album. He also has done many many songs that could be used as scored on movies, so shut the hell up
