Dennis Quaid Avoids DUI by a Hair

10/22/2009 10:30 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Dennis Quaid is a lucky man ... because last night he was about 1 inch away from getting arrested for DUI.

Dennis Quaid: Click to watch
It happened at Philippe restaurant in West Hollywood early this morning. Quaid, his wife Kimberly and a friend walked outside and the valet had already brought the car up ... the motor was running.

They got in -- Quaid behind the wheel. It looks likes Quaid may have moved the car a foot when a cop pulled up alongside and urged Quaid not to drive.

Dennis responded that he didn't want to drive. The cop repeatedly said, "Get out of the car." Quaid responds, "What do you want me to do." Quaid then asked the cop if they could go back inside the restaurant and the cop said yes.

They went inside and came out a short time later to a waiting cab. The paps screamed "You don't want a DUI. You don't want to end up like Mel Gibson." Everyone, including Dennis, laughed and they drove away.

As another commentator said, you or I would have gotten a dui and we may have deserved a break as much as him.

Unfortunately, people who are under the influence aren't good judges of anything, especially their ability to drive. However, it does show that at least one Quaid brother knows how to act in dealing with the police. A cooperative, civil attitude, especially when the car hasn't gotten on the highway, definitely influences how the officer wants to handle the situation. One thing I found interesting was one of the first things he said to the officer was, "I know we don't want to drive." It also helped that he cleared every move with the officer, especially getting out of the car and returning to the restaurant. More than anything else, the officer wants to keep a situation like this controlled for the safety of everyone involved, including his own.

On the other hand, the hypocricy of the paparazzi is beyond belief. After Quaid leaves the care and is returning to the restaurant, the mouthiest one is claiming that they saved his life. All I heard when Quaid and his party were heading to their car was the same pap trying to determine which woman had danced on the bar and then told the one who had that she was hot and telling Dennis repeatedly "Dennis, you the man!". What I didn't hear was "Dennis, don't you think you should call a cab or a limo? You don't look like you should drive!"

Apparently he doesn't care if he and his wife get killed and leave his kids as orphans.

And although he won a major lawsuit ostensibly to protect kids from heparin overdosage, he doesn't care if he kills them (or their loved ones) while driving drunk. What a jackass.

The idiocy of "celebrities" never fails to surprise me. (I use the term "celebrities" lightly in this case.)

The cop was kind. Dennis Quaid was polite, cooperative, and admitted that he should not be driving. The police cannot arrest anyone for DUI while on private property. The cop could have waited until he pulled out onto the main road, and then busted him. The whole situation was handled in a civil and legal manner.

You would think that the cops would have it in for any Quaid right now
