ESPN Benches Bob Griese for 'Taco' Crack

10/26/2009 9:35 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Can anyone at ESPN keep a job? The network suspended Bob Griese today for a racist remark he made about NASCAR driver Juan Pablo Montoya.

While he was calling Saturday's Minnesota-Ohio State game, Griese made a crack about Montoya saying he was "out having a taco." Montoya is Colombian.

ESPN is yanking Griese off the air for one week, and a rep for the network says Griese "understands the comment was inappropriate."

Yesterday ESPN fired baseball analyst Steve Phillips after news broke of his sex scandal with a production assistant.

I heard that another ESPN broadcaster used the "F" (FART) word and that Crap called to complain, so, they are suspending the broadcaster.

When will this politically correct nonsense stop?

Good God man! We as sports fans and fans of Griese should rally behind this guy. This is absurd someone needs to stand up to these cowards over at ESPN and demand his return to work.....IM IN....Anyone else?.

Juan Pablo Montoya isn't even Mexican...he's from Bogota, Columbia. If Bob had said Juan was busy smuggling cocaine, then I might see a problem. (Well, not really, I'd still think it was funny!)

Seriously? I can't believe anyone is making such a big deal over this!!!! So if you said Tony Stewart was out getting a Big Mac that would be wrong too? Get over it!!! No Big Deal! America has become way to OVER conscious with ethnicity! It was just a little joke that I'm sure gave the viewers a little chuckle that's all it was meant for.

actually, Montoya was probably out crying to anyone that'll listen about why it's someone else's fault that he can't drive a race car, the guy apologized, move on, people need to grow thicker skin

Jenny it's obvious your a little young and dumb, unless you lived your life as a person who's considered to be a minority, you will never know what's like to be offended in terms of comments that take on racila sterotypes.

Griese has been pretty inappropriate for a dozen years or more. He hasn't a clue about what he is seeing on the field, and makes an a** of himself every time he starts speaking. His TACO remark was just an excuse for ESPN to finally get him off the football broadcasts, and hope he can't find his way back. I hope he gets lost out there and just goes away.

Griese was fired not because of the montoya joke, if you fans would realize what's going on at ESPN, you would know they don't need any bad publicity or people saying things on air they may be taken out of contents or offensive( as griese joke was).

Watch out folks, the hate crimes bill was just slipped in the pentagon budget and Obama is signing it on Wed. It's gonna get worse, your rights are disappearing! What ever happened to free speech?

I think as a society we have all become way too thin-skinned. The upcoming generations are so used to having everything handed to them, not having to deal with any type of criticism, and basically expecting some sort of organization to come to their defense at the slightest hint of partiality. If Juan Pablo Montoya has an issue with Bob's comment, let him stick up for himself. Suspension? Way too drastic. But ESPN is only doing what society expects them to, given the way the world is "evolving". Unfortunately, if they didn't do anything, they get the bad name, not Bob Griese.

oh my

Seriously? As a latina I see how it can be offensive as SOOO many people just assume we are all Mexican or all Puerto Rican, etc. Montoya is Colombian, and Colombians are not known for making tacos, this is where I found it insensitive. You can't use the same cirumcstance for the examples given of an Italian, French or German, it's that mindset that you clump all latinos together like we are all one and the same. Now had he said he was off having an empanada or arepa it would have been alright by me.

he has a contract and has to live up to what that contract states. you don't have free speech at your job to say whatever you want. if i state that all my mexican co workers have all gone out for tacos, i'd expect there are going to be consequences. he's the voice that epsn puts out there. they did the right thing.
