Ominous Illness Sidelines UFC Champ Lesnar

11/15/2009 11:39 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Brock LesnarBrock Lesnar -- the UFC Heavyweight Champ -- is in "bad shape" according to UFC president Dana White and won't be fighting anytime soon.

White made the announcement after UFC 105 last night, saying "He's in a hospital up in North Dakota somewhere right now. He went to Canada and some bad stuff happened to him, so we've got to figure it out ... He doesn't want to talk about it publicly, but he's in bad shape. He's not well and he's not going to be getting well anytime soon."

Lesnar originally pulled out of a November 18 fight and reports suggested he had swine flu. The fight was rescheduled for January 2, but then it was announced Lesnar had mononucleosis.

But White made it clear, Lesnar's problems go beyond mono: "He is not good. He is very, very sick and he's going to be out for a while."

Mono causes your liver to enlarge. That's why people that get mono have to remain inactive and stay out of work/school for a really long time. They have to rest or they risk injury to their liver.

It makes perfect sense that if he had cysts on his liver now would be the time that he would show symptoms and they would discover it.

Sorry to hear of his illness but I hate to say it. I'm betting on steroids. They deplete your immune system and make you vulnerable. Get well soon.

JimE, so by that rationale, BL is natural? have you ever worked out or competed? com'n, these guys know all the tricks, and the NSAC is part of the scam. How can these guys train and abuse themselves without some kind of super hormone to heal and make their bodies stronger?? steroids are a wonder drug that has made this sport what it is. these guys are supreme athletes, but the illusion of MMA and pro FB amongst others is that this is done naturally is ridiculous. BL or any of the WWE clowns are circus freaks that could care less about the long term effects that it has on their bodies. So long as they get money and fame, they figure it's worth it to die young. No different than a stripper or porn actress enhancing their bodies for commercial gain.

They basically told us what it is. It is C-Diff or some similar hospital infection disease.

These type of illnesses grew very strong in Canada about 15 years ago, thanks to Socialized Medicine. I don't say this to make any political statement, but to state fact.

My mother developed this in a hospital and had if for the last 3 years of her life. This is a very nasty family of illnesses and can be fatal to even the strongest of us.

They are supreme athletes through conditioning and training. Just like a football player trains to endure a hit like they were just run over by a bus.

Steroids are used but it is rare and I hate that Brock entered the MMA and brought a steroid scandal with him. He should have stayed in the WWE where he belonged.

Brock Lesnar was big his whole life. Get off the steroid bandwagon. He gets tested all the time and even spoke out against drugs in wrestling years ago. He's clean. So he has mono and had lots of chances to get a second infection. In the hospital. He travels. He is a hunter. BUT HERE IS THE BIGGEST THING... He is a workout junkie. He works out no matter how he feels, even if the doc told him not to. The gym = germs. STAPH. Or workingout mixed with fever means lack of fluids in his system. Kindeys, it happens to bodybuilders who get the flu. With mono it could be bad. Hope he is well soon and with his wife and new baby.

Someone said "They basically told us what it is. It is C-Diff or some similar hospital infection disease. These type of illnesses grew very strong in Canada about 15 years ago, thanks to Socialized Medicine."

Hospital-acquired infections are a major problem down here in the USA with its chaotic private insurance system as well. I'm sure that the fact that Canada has a more sensible tax-based insurance system isn't the reason they've had similar troubles. Hospitals everywhere are country clubs for microorganisms of a wide variety of species, despite the best efforts of staff to keep things sanitary. The problem is that one-celled organisms (as pathogens typically are) can also easily share genetic material between species, because in addition to chromosomal DNA (shared via cell fusion and cell fission) they also have circular bits of DNA in the cytoplasm called plasmids which other types of microbeasties can easily pick up. These generally contain the codes involved in antibiotic resistance, so if one species acquires resistance by natural mutation then other species in close proximity can pick it up via the plasmids. Different species that wouldn't encounter each other in the wild are close enough for this process to occur within hospitals.

Hospitals are thus very risky places for sick people. Avoid them whenever you can. If you can't, keep the visit as short as possible.

As a medical professional, I can honestly say, that while amazed at Brock's tenacity and ability to fight, it would be absolutely ridiculous to not entertain the use of steroids, and the damage they can cause. The explosive temper, and abnormally large muscle mass do not as a rule come without the use of a substance,,even for a farm kid from Minnesota. Call it what it really is-who are we protecting here?
