GLAAD Backs ABC's Decision to Can Lambert

12/3/2009 7:30 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Adam Lambert's sexual orientation had nothing to do with ABC's decision to can him from two upcoming gigs on their network ... it was all because he can't stick to a script -- at least that's what ABC and GLAAD would like you to believe.

Adam Lambert

The nation's most outspoken gay rights group just released a statement in support of ABC's decision to boot Lambert from "Jimmy Kimmel Live" and an upcoming New Year's Eve special in the wake of his AMA performance -- the one with the man-on-man kiss.

ABC sent a statement to GLAAD, explaining how Adam's removal was "not a question of Lambert's sexual orientation" but was instead because his live performance at the AMAs differed "greatly" from rehearsals and "caught the network off guard" -- which is justification for dropping him from other live shows.

Today, GLAAD backed ABC's explanation saying, "It would appear that the kiss between Adam Lambert and his keyboardist did not factor into ABC's decision ... ABC has a history of positive gay and transgender inclusion that includes featuring kisses between gay and lesbian couples on-air."

For the record, neither Adrien Brody nor Halle Berry were banned from appearing on any ABC shows after their "unscripted" make-out session at the 2003 Academy Awards.

UPDATE: GLAAD tells us they have "asked ABC and calls on them for clarification on 'caught off guard' so that the community knows why Lambert is being denied the opportunity to perform on the network."

GLAAD is exactly right - the "backlash" (at least from the networks) against Adam has NOTHING to do with him kissing another guy. Instead, it has everything to do with the fact that Adam has shown, that at this point in his VERY YOUNG career, he cannot be trusted with such high visibility exposure. Right when the firestorm started, he tried to explain his performance by basically saying he got caught up in the moment, went of script, etc. That is EXACTLY what a major network cannot risk in this day of tough FCC scrutiny. Remember, this was Adam's 1st major performance as an artist, and if you are a TV network boss, what impression are you left with: that Adam cannot be trusted to stay on script and his "heat of the moment" conduct is pretty aggressive and perverse. Who gives a f**k about him kissing another guy? I sure did not. But I did say "wow" when he slammed a band member's face into his crutch and an even bigger "wow" when he had his hand all up in a woman's crotch. Those aren't just little deviations from the normal performance. And, clearly, Adam needs to go out and do some performances on some not as visible programs in order to show that he can be trusted and that the AMA performance was an anamoly and not the norm. Because right now, he has no reputation or credibilty to fall back on for TV networks to just trust that it was the former.

Not to mention, Halle Berry was horrified by the kiss and felt humiliated afterwards. She's still pretty bitter about it...

No one wants to see two guys kiss. With straight or even gay people it's different. Gay women kind of cross the line but gay men is just nasty to see. It might not be right but it's my opinion.

Why does every article about this guy fixate on 'the kiss' ??? It's the simulated oral sex that made his performance offensive. Jamming someone's face into your crotch is inappropriate on family TV no matter what your sexual orientation. Get to the point and call it what it is: OBSCENE and VULGAR !!! Glambert's an ass !!!

Which kiss are they talking about? The mouth-to-mouth... which shouldn't be a factor, or the mouth to crotch shot, which should?

What disgusts me, not only with him, but with Brittney and Madonna is that these are awards shows, and they should be respected for that. People win these awards for putting a good product out there. I will never again buy anything from any of these people who don't show respect to those who have spent a lot of money on them in the past. Disgusting!

How ironic that this two bit douche thought he could be so avant garde with his performance. Look where it got him? Serveral cancellations. And for the record, I support gay rights 100%, gay marriage, etc. He just wanted to cause a stir, and did, and it ended up backfiring on him. He is in no position and does not have the clout to push the envelope that much.

Frankly, I was not offended by the kiss, it was the simulated oral sex scene, which has NOT been widely shown all over network tv. Gay kissing scenes have been around for years already. Adam needs to move over to cable if that's the kind of 'performer/entertainer' he wants to be.

You can go off script as long as it's hetero. Pink shoved a guy's head in her crotch during a performance in 2004 and no one complained. All these things have been done for years by female pop stars but when a gay guy does it ABC is out for blood. Nice of GLAAD to condone ABC's bigotry and double standards.

ABC's done a lot for the Gay community, so scraping the AMA's makes sense. But Kimmel and NYE, too? Pre taped appearances? FAIL. This is crap.

Thank god that Glaad came forward with a statement. This was never a gay issue. I would have been just as offended by any singer who performed such a disgusting performance.

No one wants to see his "show". He was not aired because normal people don't consider his performance entertaining. Get over it.

What about P!nk? She shoved a guy's crotch into her face and the FCC and Fox did nothing about it. I don't care what way you slice it, this is all because it was a same-sex kiss/crotch-to-face.
