Octopus Goes Nuts!

12/16/2009 1:00 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

... as in coconuts.

Biologists in Indonesia have discovered an octopus that uses coconuts for cover -- and travels the ocean floor using the shell for shelter!

The incredible video is believed to be the first evidence of tool use by an invertebrate ... if you don't include Spongebob and his pineapple under the sea.

I LOVE IT ! ! !

Yet more proof the humans ARE NOT **GOD'S** CHOSEN BEINGS.

A number of creatures in our lifetime have begun using TOOLS to better the quality of their lives.

Now how about that???

How AWESOME! To be able to see the sealife taking it's course in daily living. Spectacular!

Also... we're (Alaska) is getting dumped on big time. Already over several feet of snow in Anchorage, and more still coming. A perfect Christmas scene. Frosty and snowing.

Merry Christmas Everyone!

Linda in Alaska.

What's the big deal? I have been living in a coconut shell on the bottom of the ocean since 1903. It's nothing new.

Even though anything with more than 4 legs (no kidding) scares the crap out of me, this is cute!

Uck! That octopus is such a famewhore! I mean, pretending to not want to be filmed while, really, it'll do anything to be on TV. Pfft!

OMG! The first trans-Crustacean! A Crustacean trapped in the body of an Octopus! Poor thing, no hormones to help it out! Chaz, any advice?

This is a neat story and all, but it has been shown everywhere. It doesn't really belong on TMZ IMO.

Love it!

Gotta say, with that many legs I would think an octopus could carry something across the sea floor a bit more gracefully.

Good thing they don't have opposable thumbs yet or we'd be in for some competition.

octo-pus doen't seem to love the media attention as much as octo-skank. octo-pus is definitely more photo-genic, more intelligent, a better mother and has a nicer house!

Agree very cute! Shows the intelligence/ingenuity of an octopus!
also wondering if he/she is going through an identity crisis - maybe wants to be a snail?
