Billy Ray Cyrus -- Silent Night in Afghanistan

12/25/2009 9:09 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Billy Ray Cyrus gave the U.S. troops in Afghanistan an unexpected treat this week -- breaking out an impromptu rendition of "Silent Night" during a tour of a military operations center in Kabul.

It all went down after Cyrus learned the soldiers in the "war room" were unable to attend his stage performance scheduled for later in the trip. Someone asked Billy Ray to sing a little Christmas carol for the group -- and without hesitation, dude obliged.

Good work BRC.

So what he went to Afghanistan? He didn't do it quietly did he? Wants every news outlet on earth to know he made a "sacrifice" for the troops. Just a PR self promotion tactic. Could have at least taken off his sunglasses and dropped the superstar persona for one minute. I'm sure the troops vomitted up their Christmas dinner.

If you like the man or not, he is spending his holidays with our troops. He is bringing them a bit of home. He is on tv daily about 4 or 5 times. He had a nice song last year "Ready, set, don't go", and he writes a lot of his daughter's songs.
I want to thank him for taking his time and volunteering. Too many people spend time writing dumb sly remarks on message boards about people doing good things, while that time could be used to help their fellow humans.

I also have never been a big fan of BRC, but now definitely have respect for the dude. You guys were right, he could be sitting his rich ass in Aspen watching Charlie Sheen beat up his drunk wife, but he chose to help the troops. Way to go man..

TMZ - use your power for some Good: Give us a good list of all the stars who spent their Christmas supporting the troops!!
