Man in Photo is Not JFK

12/28/2009 2:57 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

TMZ received an email from someone who said the photo we posted showing a man appearing to be John F. Kennedy on a yacht with naked women was actually a photo from a 1967 Playboy photo shoot.

We have contacted Playboy and a rep says the photo did indeed run in one of its 1967 issues. We are trying to get a copy and will update as soon as we get the info.

UPDATE: 2:34 PM ET
We've now confirmed the photo was part of a Playboy spread in 1967. The image published in Playboy was published in color.

UPDATE: 1:11 PM ET
A rep from Playboy tells TMZ the photo ran as part of story titled, "Playboy's Charter Yacht Party: How to Have a Ball on the Briny with an Able-Bodies Complement of Ship's Belles." She says the photo was taken on one of the islands that make up the Grenadines (Petit Rameau).

Dead giveaway - the fake has the dot-pattern from the original four-color process printed image. It was scanned from the magazine, then Photoshopped. You can minimize the dot-pattern with filters, and it looks like whoever did the forgery tried, but not hard enough.

So much for the experts TMZ had look at the photo. Hope they didn't pay too much for the (help). We all know JFK was a womanizer, but try and stick to the facts and quit making stuff up. And as for the punk on the comment site a few pages ago who said he was glad JFK was assainated, I hope you die a miserable death. Although he loved a lot of women besides his wife, he was good for this country in a time when things were getting out of hand. He and his brother were taken away before they could finish the job of rebuilding this country.

Are you people brain dead? Of course JFK was dead in 1967. Playboy is saying the photo came from a shoot in 67. They never said the guy in the photo was JFK. In other words........aw, nevermind.

Wow. Major IQ Fails on this board.

MY EYES!!!

erm,... Harv,... I suggest that if you want to do 'real' investigative journalism that you start another site/company/TV show and just let TMZ do what it does best - report on gossip about famous brats. TMZ isn't set up to be the next 60 Minutes.

TMZ BREAKING NEWS: Picture of George Washington in a threesome with Olsen twins surfaces. No doubt real.

5 minutes later.....

TMZ BREAKING NEWS: Our bad. We should have taken five minutes to research this but we have no integrity 'cause we peddle sleaze.

Btw, I feel for JFK's daughter who has been through enough in her life already. A-holes.

The only thing your "forensic photo expert" proved is that he's no expert!

Any idiot can see, if you look at the photo in large enough resolution, that it's composed of dots - which means it was scanned from a magazine or newspaper, not made from an original negative.

You can even see the dots clear as day in the side-by side shots posted with the original story! Unbelievable!

Well, it had me fooled. On the surface, it DID look like JFK relaxing on a boat off a Meditteranean island somewhere. The male model in the shot is an uncanny dead-ringer for the late President, an absolutely astonishing physical likeness. You could see that on the video, the facial features of the President and the man in the shot, when superimposed on each other fit almost perfectly. The fact that the photo was heavily damaged, black & white and was printed on stock common in the '50s lent it a definite air of authenticity. I wouldn't bother being too critical of TMZ for this, as any newspaper editor or news blog editor offered this photo would have run with it, I absolutely guarantee it, given its sensationalism. They called in experts in an attempt to verify it, so it is not their fault that the experts were wrong.

Anyone ever think that it may be Hugh Hefner?? Look at any picture of him circa late 60's and it's very plausible it's just the ol man whore sunning himself.

Once again Harvey, you disgust me and the tribe, please go to temple and repent for grievous sins.

Where's the apology for TMZ's mess-up? Or are you waiting to figure out which "rogue employee" you're going to fire before you apologize? Pathetic.

Geee, what happened to the headline about it being the photo that could have changed history? TMZ - all the credibility of the National Inquirer, with none of the wit.

who cares, so they made an error?!?!?! TMZ is still the best entertainment news website. Remember when Perez declared that Castro was dead? he never recanted his story, at least TMZ has the balls to admit when they're wrong. And the story ran for only a few hours until it was proven false, it didnt ACtually CAUSE Kennedy to lose the election, no one was hurt, so chill out. TMZ ALWAYS has the news first and they are usually right 99.9% of the time, tmz is where all the other websites get their info from. so lay off
I still love you Harvey, and the surfer dude, and the blond girl, and the brunette girl and the black guy and the gay guy. you guys rock!!
