KFC Ad -- OK for Australia, Racist for US?

1/6/2010 2:40 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Placating a crowd of black people with a bucket of chicken is considered good marketing by Kentucky Fried Chicken in Australia -- but it's causing a bit of a fervor here in the States.

The ad shows a very distressed white guy, surrounded by a crowd of black people at a cricket match, who wonders, "Need a tip when you're stuck in an awkward situation?" He gets out of the "awkward situation" by handing them a bucket of chicken.

A rep for KFC Australia told a local paper, "It is a light-hearted reference to the West Indian cricket team ... The ad was reproduced online in the US without KFC's permission, where we are told a culturally-based stereotype exists, leading to the incorrect assertion of racism."

UPDATE -- We just got this statement: "KFC Australia is removing the television advertisement that was being run in conjunction with the Australian cricket season. We apologize for any misinterpretation of the ad as it was not meant to offend anyone."

That was so racist it was ridiculous. If people over there is saying that it is not racist and all in good fun, where are the ads portraying white sterotypes with black actors. hmmm. bet you can't find any. It is deplorable as the black face "comedy" routine that was shown last year where harry connick jr. was on the show.

white people love chicken just as much as black folks.

The fact that we in the U.S. find it racist is racist! And egocentric. Dear fellow Americans: get out, travel and experience other cultures for Pete's sake!

Exactly! yettawa

I'm with Dinka. I didn't see anything "awkward" about that "situation". The people were all smiling, dancing and having a good time. I could see it if he was on his way to a friend's house with the chicken, got lost in a bad neighborhood and a bunch of thugs approached his car...not that's awkward, lol! People of all races enjoy fried chicken, not just blacks. The chicken and watermelon stereotype is so antiquated, it's time it went away like 2009.

Err, the racist stereotype allude to is an AMERICAN stereotype that does not exists in other countries. So when the guy gives the chicken to the TEAM he is doing that to befriend the West Indies team with a good meal and not to appease blacks.

all the people that say it is not racist are white. if it was a crowd of white people and the black man passed out slices of unseasoned & dry pot roast white people wouldn't be to happy about it.

The advert is not racist. I grew up in the West Indies. The black people are having a good time watching cricket which is the most popular sport. The white guy is wearing a soccer jersey. He is out of place and is breaking the ice. Only in America would people think this is racist because no one can see past the stereotype of what is considered Black.

buh-bye weiner party!

My definition of racist is hating, or at least disliking and looking down upon, all people of races other than your own. Would it be racist if a commercial from China showed a Chinese man handing out hamburgers to Americans? People are desperate to find something to become indignant about. Pathetic.
