KFC Ad -- OK for Australia, Racist for US?

1/6/2010 2:40 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Placating a crowd of black people with a bucket of chicken is considered good marketing by Kentucky Fried Chicken in Australia -- but it's causing a bit of a fervor here in the States.

The ad shows a very distressed white guy, surrounded by a crowd of black people at a cricket match, who wonders, "Need a tip when you're stuck in an awkward situation?" He gets out of the "awkward situation" by handing them a bucket of chicken.

A rep for KFC Australia told a local paper, "It is a light-hearted reference to the West Indian cricket team ... The ad was reproduced online in the US without KFC's permission, where we are told a culturally-based stereotype exists, leading to the incorrect assertion of racism."

UPDATE -- We just got this statement: "KFC Australia is removing the television advertisement that was being run in conjunction with the Australian cricket season. We apologize for any misinterpretation of the ad as it was not meant to offend anyone."

"Aussies are still the biggest racists on the planet. That's old news. That's what happens when you live in the outback and you're segregated from the rest of civilization. They're also extremely sexist too. And they still refer to Chinese and Japanese people as Orientals. They're geographically and socially out of the loop."

Your third line reveals how ignorant and ill-informed you are. The majority of the Australian population live in urbanized cities that cling to the coastlines. You claim Australia is sexist, too - yet it was one of the first nations to allow women the right to vote. The rest of your statements are idiotic...

This ad isn't racist because the majority of Australian's don't have the same connection as U.S blacks do with fried chicken.

I think it is racist, alot of people forget that racist means your saying all those people as a whole do or look something together. I am pretty sure not ALL black people like chicken(even though i am, and i do). so i think it is racist. Alot of minority don't wanna live with there stereotypes, it's like living with a bad nickname from a younger time.

Firstly, the stereotype is regarding African Americans, the black people in the ad are West Indian, so the stereotype isn't about them. Secondly, it's an awkward situation because he's going for Australia in the cricket and he's sitting amongst West-Indies supporters, who are obviously celebrating their team scoring....wouldn't that be awkward? So, he's offering chicken to relieve the tension of sitting amongst the opposition....it's not a matter of black or white. Australia doesn't have a lot of the racist hang ups that America has. Why does everyone have to consider America and it's past while creating advertising? It was meant for Australian audiences where this stereotype that the yanks are whinging about doesn't exist. America is so racist that they've turned something innocent into a race issue. How bout a cup of concrete America....harden the f*ck up.

America thinks they're the center of the universe...it's a real problem. So, America owns everyone, their problems are everyone's problems, their history is everyone's history, and they own all black people...apparently. Since there's black people in the ad, they must be african american, so the chicken reference must be racist. America needs to stop being arrogant and ignorant. Americans have no idea about Australia, it's culture, it's history...anything really. It shows time and time again the ignorance of America.

It is not racist.
It is an "awkward situation" because the Aussie guy is seated with all the West Indies cricket team supporters. How would you guys feel at a baseball game having to sit amongst a whole bunch of people cheering for the opposite team?
He gives them chicken because the point of the ad means that everyone loves chicken so they can now be friends.
It has absolutely nothing to do with colour/race.
Talk about making something out of nothing.

On the same night this blew up and America got their knickers in a knot over it, I watched an episode of the Cleveland Show...in which they inferred a negative way to say someone is smart is to call them a Jew, and when in a restaurant, someone yelled out 'who ordered the fried chicken?' and the camera panned a room of black people...the one white person said 'that's mine', making it funny that out of all those black people, the only white person was the actual one who ordered the chicken. Where's the uproar about that? Racist towards 2 races in one episode...one of the jokes using the exact same stereotype causing uproar with the KFC ad. Look in your own backyard america....if this ad is racist, that episode of the Cleveland show should be yanked off the air and condemned in the same way. Hypocrites. Not only that, the commercial wasn't about black or white...it was about opposing times...I was under the impression that most West Indian's were black...

Madam Obvious

351. 99% of Aussies hate america with a passion.

Tim, I'm Australian and you most certainly do not speak for me. Where did you get that statistic from? Your butt? Along with the majority of Aussies, I certainly don't "hate America with a passion", in fact I like Americans very much indeed and admire much about the USA. I just don't admire episodes like this where little understanding of something is displayed and needless charges of racism (God, I HATE that word) are stirred up unnecessarily.

Love it when American's impose their history on other nations. Just because White Americans screwed over Black Americans doesn't mean the rest of the word need to be overly PC OR immediately look for racism whenever different races are represented or not represented in the media.

The 'awkward' situation was he was a siting with opposition team and of course cheering. The ad was for KFC so he offered them chicken. If they were selling beer or meat pies (our national fatsfood) and offered that then this type of over reacting 'but sooo typical from Americans' would not have happened.

Essentially...get over yourselves. Your history is shameful. Your present is even more embarreassing. You future...good luck.

MrEKO73

This reminds me of last year when Americans had their panties in a wad over the Men's Spanish Basketball team making "slant eyes" gestures with their fingers while they where in China. It wasn't a racist gesture on the Teams fault nor did China find it offensive one iota. But we were just going out of our minds about it!

I don't know that much about Black Americans. I assume they eat things, drink things, breathe oxygen etc just like all other humans. I'm white, I eat KFC. Its like the national hangover food..hello! It's cricket season in Australia. Cricket is our national sport. Our main rivals for many years have been the West Indies...who are black. Oh my god. Yes they have black skin..shocking I know. So he we have Mr Aussie Joe Blow at a cricket match between Aus and WI and poor fella is in the opposing team section. To make friends he shares his KFC. What a nice fella coz everyone...the whites and the blacks and all the inbetweens love the KFC.

Love it when American media jump on bandwagons without doing any type research at all. Ah America...land of trash journalism, origin of the 'ho' and home to eternally stupid.

My god seriously some of you people are stupid.

This has NOTHING to do with racism. These ads are a series of KFC ads run during the cricket... and in every single ad the guy in the yellow shirt uses KFC to get himself in or out of situations... such as getting free tickets into the ground.... getting a better seat etc.

The fact he is using KFC has nothing to do with the fact they are black... but that he is an Australian supporter sitting around West Indian supporters (who are currently playing in Australia) and using the chicken to stop them making so much noise.

It's pathetic that once again the US of A things they are higher and mightier than everyone else.

The hilarious thing is that the West Indies cricet team have been previously SPONSORED by KFC and proudly worn the KFC logo's on their shirts.

I guess that must mean KFC in the West Indies must be racist as well.

Oh and look at this.... KFC also sponsor the local West Indies Cricket competition.. and call it the "KFC Cup". Gee the West Indies must be racist against themselves.

Honestly Americans are the most uneducated buffoons I've ever met.

Who cares if it's racist?! Look at all the crime that is being committed by black dudes just on the stories currently posted. If the black race is criticized, it's well deserved!

I didn't know they ate chicken in Britain's Penal Colony. I thought they only ate Aborigines down there. (when they were sober enough to stand that is)
