KFC Ad -- OK for Australia, Racist for US?

1/6/2010 2:40 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Placating a crowd of black people with a bucket of chicken is considered good marketing by Kentucky Fried Chicken in Australia -- but it's causing a bit of a fervor here in the States.

The ad shows a very distressed white guy, surrounded by a crowd of black people at a cricket match, who wonders, "Need a tip when you're stuck in an awkward situation?" He gets out of the "awkward situation" by handing them a bucket of chicken.

A rep for KFC Australia told a local paper, "It is a light-hearted reference to the West Indian cricket team ... The ad was reproduced online in the US without KFC's permission, where we are told a culturally-based stereotype exists, leading to the incorrect assertion of racism."

UPDATE -- We just got this statement: "KFC Australia is removing the television advertisement that was being run in conjunction with the Australian cricket season. We apologize for any misinterpretation of the ad as it was not meant to offend anyone."

No, I don't think the ad is racist.

The pulling of the ad also has nothing to do with America or Americans.

The only thing about this that is an embarrassment to Australia is the behavior of some Australians on this Board and elsewhere.

If one were to judge by their comments then Australians are a vicious, poisonous and shockingly stupid people.

But of course that's not true either.

Racist... absolutely...

Americans, this add was referencing the West Indian cricket team. The Australian advertisers were too stupid to know that fried chicken is SOOOOOOOOO not a West Indian delicacy and used a typical American Black stereotype to characterize a people they do not understand...

My family is Black West Indian and did not encounter fried chicken till they came over to the states in the 60s. Even after being in the states for decades they still don't eat friend chicken. They'll roast a chicken or stew a chicken, but they eat more salmon than anything else... Kingfish, red snapper, oxtail, stew chicken, curried goat, patties, etc... I mean... fried chicken has NOTHING to do with the West Indies, folks... If they'd done even the slightest bit of research, they would understand that commercial made ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE.

So again...yes it was racist for a country that has a less than .01% Black population to conceptualize a Black WEST INDIAN cricket team based on White AMERICAN stereotypes.

Aussie Suck Rou Nuts

What the Australians (racist people on earth) are saying is "it's O.K. to make fun of blacks (West Indies) from around the world, except American black. Black is black you idoits.

This is ridiculous, this ad isnt racist at all. Its depicting a guy, who is stuck among a bunch of supporters of the opposite team to his. The idea is that everybody likes KFC, so the scenario would work if it was the English cricket team or the Kiwi cricket team.

I think the fact people see it as racist is an indicator that they are still racist themselves, seeing skin colour rather than a bunch of people supporting different teams.

The US hypocrisy continues

409: Since when have Australians been the most racist people on earth? Look to your own backyard before you make ridiculous allegations like that that are impossible to substantiate. ie. centuries of kidnapping blacks from the west coast of Africa to put them to work as slaves on plantations; the Ku Klux Klan; lynch mobs; Jim Crow laws; racially segregated schools, buses, rest rooms, restaurants; race riots; inner city black ghettoes; black-white tensions that exist to this day. Yeah, here in Australia we keep forgetting about America's stellar history of race relations. Such a shining example to us all, aren't you?

411. And of course, the American Red Indians were treated with such care and respect by the whites weren't they???????? No, they weren't marginalised at all, weren't run off their lands, had their cultures, food sources and lifestyle ruthlessly destroyed, had no diseases introduced into their communities, weren't forced to live on dirt poor reservations. Again, the US leads the way on compassionate treatment of their indigenous population (not).

Wake the hell up and read up on your own history before you DARE criticise and mock other nations for theirs. 95% of Americans would not be able to locate Australia on a world map, they wouldn't have the vaguest clue where in the world Australia actually is, so the average American is hardly qualified to analyse Australia's racial history, or anything else about Australia, really.

Boo Hoo

414.Up yours Kangaroo Jack. Don't critize America because a few blacks thinks its racist to offer them fried chicken. I'm white, hand me a jar of Mayo I'd accept it then laugh like heck. People need to lighten up.

Just wait, pretty soon fried chicken will be illegal too.

Yes this add is extremely RACISCT. So what, who cares??????

it is racist, and it doesn't help that australia has been know as one of the most racist country's in the world. They just issue an apolgy in 2008 for the way they treated the indigenous people back in world war 2, which in my opinion wasn't too much different then the nazi death camps

All your base are belong to us

Not racist at all.

Please, understand the CONTEXT. It's cricket in the Caribbean so the visuals match the setting.

Many Caribbean people would GET/understand the ad too.

No harm there.

"440. Almost every commentary I've seen about this that originates in the US says something like "calming a crowd of black people".

The problem is, Americans are projecting their own shameful cultural experience of racism on to people to whom it doesn't apply in this context - Australians and West Indians, who have been playing cricket against each other for a century and, even though race conscious Americans might not understand, really like each other. Colour isn't an issue.

In this ad, you in America see "black" and "white", Down Under - and doubtless in the Caribbean - we'll be seeing "cricket fans from two opposing teams".

This speaks more about American racism than it does about anything to do with Australia.

It's also another great example of the inability of Americans to view the world through anything other than their myopic view filtered through their own cultural experience.

Black people/fried chicken and threatened white guy/large crowd of blacks just don't exist as racial stereotypes in Australia or the West Indies, at least not in the context of watching a cricket match.

And since this ad was produced in Australia for Australian consumption during the recent West Indies cricket tour of Oz, you don't even get the context and in this case, cultural context is everything.

We're NOT Americans. What you understand in realtion to this doesn't apply! Try to get your heads around the idea that America is not the only country on the planet. This is what the rest of the world finds Americans very, very annoying much of the time.

In short, Americans look at this and go: "Racists"

We look at the bizarre, over the top reaction to it by Americans failing to even understand that what goes on outside their own country might be something different, to it and say: "Idiots".

And the author touches on something. Just because someone is black doesn't mean their world view and perceptions are the same as US blacks. American whites are not the same as British whites or Russian whites or Australian whites.

So too, blacks from the US, Caribbean, Canada, and Africa are all different.

Please stop stereotyping blacks or whites.

IF America had any knowledge of Australian cricket, they would realise that the so called "uncomfortable situation" he was stuck in, was being the only one of his team in amongst a rival team, NOT the fact that he is white and they are coloured, we have all sorts of races here and they are accepted readily, just because we use different coloured people in our advertisements does not in any way mean we are being racist. What is that saying..... Dont judge a book by its cover?
