KFC Ad -- OK for Australia, Racist for US?

1/6/2010 2:40 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Placating a crowd of black people with a bucket of chicken is considered good marketing by Kentucky Fried Chicken in Australia -- but it's causing a bit of a fervor here in the States.

The ad shows a very distressed white guy, surrounded by a crowd of black people at a cricket match, who wonders, "Need a tip when you're stuck in an awkward situation?" He gets out of the "awkward situation" by handing them a bucket of chicken.

A rep for KFC Australia told a local paper, "It is a light-hearted reference to the West Indian cricket team ... The ad was reproduced online in the US without KFC's permission, where we are told a culturally-based stereotype exists, leading to the incorrect assertion of racism."

UPDATE -- We just got this statement: "KFC Australia is removing the television advertisement that was being run in conjunction with the Australian cricket season. We apologize for any misinterpretation of the ad as it was not meant to offend anyone."

Not racist because KFC chicken sucks. Its like eating pigoen wings. Wonder where the watermelon joke started, cause most black people don't eat watermelon

Curtis the LOGICAL ONE

That was FLAT OUT RACIST. I'm if anything I should be defending the fact that it wasn't racist but come on. "awkward situation"- white man with a bunch black people acting rowdy at a popular sporting event compare that too football-basketball in the USA. "How do I calm down these crazy black people so I don't feel so awkward and scared?" said the white guy. "I know! KFC! Black people love chicken!....(wait for it..wait for it...) EASY!," he exclaimed. RACIST.

He should have checked to make sure he still had his wallet. Also, I hope his wife or GF isn't blonde.... he could have REAL problems!

It is racist worst...

Racially insensitive at the least...

It's based on old stereotypes during a time when blacks, especially black men, were denigrated and considered second-tier citizens...

Don't let Obama fool you into thinking there aren't raging racists still in America...remember the KKK people? Lynching? Jim Crow? Slavery? I think it's dangerous and reckless to play with fire...And, this type of insensitive advertising is inflammatory...

If it isn't racist, then, why have a white man hand a group of black guys a bucket of chicken? Why couldn't the group of guys have been white? What? White people don't like fried chicken?

Puleez...this is garbage and anyone who says otherwise needs to educate him/herself

jealous poor white trailer trash

The ad is not racist at all. If they had a ad with a black man living in a trailer, smelling like a wet dog, having hair lice jumping on his head while screwing his cousin... would that be considered racist???

Just sayin

Boo Hoo

to #131 Homer now why would KFC have an ad about a lice infested black dude living in a trailer nailing his own daughter?
This ad is much better!, but should have included some Grape Soda.

There must be a hell of a lot of people out there who are not aware of one of the worst stereotypes out there. God, the world is full of morons. Do you have to be over 35 with some semblance of cultural awareness to get something that hits you over the head with its stupidity? So reassuring to know that Australians are just as culturally obtuse.
