NBC to Conan O'Brien -- The Choice Is Yours

1/8/2010 9:25 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

NBC has given Conan O'Brien the option to either do his show from midnight to 1 or leave the network, sources tell TMZ.

Conan Obrien and Jay Leno

As TMZ first reported, after the Olympics, Jay Leno will get his 11:30 PM time period back. We're told network execs have told Conan they will let him decide if he wants the midnight to 1:00 AM time slot. If he does, Leno's show will only be a half hour. If Conan walks, Leno will get a full hour, informed sources tell TMZ.

Our sources say Conan has not decided what he wants. We do know he's pissed, because he was given no advanced warning this was coming. Conan's people told NBC they are considering the offer. Translation: Mr. O'Brien -- I have Rupert Murdoch on line one, Stephen McPherson on line two, John Landgraf on line three, Jeff Wachtel on line four ...

We're told if Conan gets another offer, even though NBC could block the move, they will let him go and give Leno the full hour.

Even if Conan would stay then their going to make Jimmy Fallon do his show from 1 - 2am??? They are screwing over TWO guys that dropped everything to come work for their network. NBC blows! Letterman's laughin' all the way to the bank. Scandal shmandal

Conan isnt the reason Jay is moving back, its because Jay's show is tanking. They thought he'd still get good ratings at 10pm but his show has been a disappointment so they are moving him back to 11:30pm.

You people arent too bright if you think NBC is more concerned over winning 11:30pm ratings than 10pm ratings. The 10pm slot is more important and Jay's show isn't cutting it.

So theyre moving him back to where he was, even though he's not funny and because Jimmy Fallon already has the slot after the tonight show, Conan is the odd man out.

NBC should just tell Jay to hang it up already because he's not funny. Keep Conan. You need to give him time, Jay didnt have good ratings when he 1st started.

To olddrunk- Leno announced over 5 years ago that he would be retiring when his contract expired in 2009. It was he who changed his mind AFTER it was announced that Conan would be his replacement. When Leno decided not to retired NBC offered him the stupid earlier gig because Conan was already set to replace him. The one who is getting the shaft is certainly Conan. Leno needs to retire like his original plan.

This is moronic and I can't believe what I'm reading. Don't mess with The Tonight Show. Conan is the best! And this coming from a diehard Letterman and Leno fan from the 80's. But things progress, and comedy changes, and the future of late night is Conan and it has been since he went on the air in 93. The last thing anyone should be relying on is ratings. We all know the dumbest people have the most time to watch tv because they're not working or paying their bills. So advertisers are falling over themselves to advertise to people who can't afford to buy their products! Super smart of them! Just please, let the smart people have Conan on the show he's already on!

while neither is worthy to keep around, if I had to choose I'd choose Leno. Conan is just not funny. His jokes are too childish. An insult to anyone's intelligence

No trailer trash

Hope Conan leaves.

Conan only appeals to the uneducated, unsophisticated, base humor seeking type who think the Simpsons is good humor.

Good riddance to you Conan and all your stupid bits.

How soon people forget that this isn't the first time NBC pulled this kind of crap over the Tonight Show...
When Johnny Carson retired, he planned on handing the show over to David Letterman...NBC had different plans (Leno) and Letterman went to CBS...
Now that Leno is not #1, he's whining and NBC is screwing Conan over...

Conan has done nothing to deserve the treatment he's getting from NBC and Leno...
That being said, I will no longer view any shows on NBC (not that they have anything decent on) and I will follow Conan wherever he ends up...Which I highly doubt will be at NBC, even after Leno...

Midnight? That's too late. I want to see Conan earlier.

Those of you who want to see Conan on NBC and earlier than midnight should write to NBC. We should point them to TMZ's poll too, last I saw there were 58k votes and 63% preferred O'Brien over Leno.

It won't work unless they give Jay the full 11:30 hour and offer Conan 12:30 just like it was. Call it the failed experiment that it is. Jay's new format and time slot doesn't work and Conan is far less funny toned down for 11:30.

BTW,
Those of you who worship Letterman and are dissing Conan, think about this...Conan was the head writer for Letterman's show for years...

Letterman would be NOTHING without Conan...

No trailer trash, I'm highly educated and highly paid and I prefer O'Brien over Leno. So there goes your idiotic theory.

Leno reminds me of the dopes on the Fox News channel. I'm going to assume that you're a Republican and that's why Leno's old-fashioned and boring "humor" appeals to you. You probably think global warming is a hoax, too.

How many people is Leno gonna screw over to get the Tonight show???????????? HAHA. I mean come on, Letterman and Conan do such a better job at monologues than Leno (Let's face it)and poor Conan is getting the Letterman shaft BIG TIME! To make things worse, they have Conan on Leno's last show kissin' his ass and now i'm sure he wants to kick it!! If they can all agree to go back to same hours and get rid of Jimmy Fallon, EVERYONE WOULD BE HAPPY, HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!.

Conan is not cutting the bill, plain and simple, he is not pulling in the viewers. CNN Anderson 360 just did a story on it tonight. Pretty interesting stuff. I agree they should have just left it as it was, but I refuse to watch Conan and I know several others that are the same way, we watch David Letterman and Craig Ferguson. NBC has lost many supporters/viewers etc., since this big switch of Conan going to The Tonight Show. If they want to get the ratings back and the viewers back they have no choice but to do this and bring Jay Leno back to The Tonight Show. After all, Jay Leno is the king of late night.

Hollywood will never learn, if it's not broke, don't try fixing it.

Well, it's like Jay said during the whole Letterman/Leno debacle: "NBC stands for 'Never Believe your Contract.'"
