'The Tonight Show' with Jay Leno ... The Sequel

1/12/2010 9:15 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Jay LenoJay Leno will get his one-hour show back, and it will be called "The Tonight Show".... sources tell TMZ.

We're told NBC honchos still have to sit down with Jay's rep and put the finishing touches on a new deal, but NBC has signed off on the plan if Conan O'Brien leaves ... and Conan has made it clear that he's leaving the network, and not on good terms.

O'Brien took several cheap shots at Leno in his blistering letter, denigrating Leno's show as a "comedy program."

Sources tell TMZ Jay and Conan have not spoken with each other since NBC announced the switch.

It's looking increasingly like Conan may be making a deal with Fox for a late night show from 11:00 PM to midnight.

@Kevin - The "supporters" watch the show. Heck, Conan's been keeping the same numbers as he was when he was on Late Night.

But you know how you expand that audience? By letting people who never knew about the show watch it. And you know what's a pretty good way to do that? Lead-ins. Sure, we can't say for sure that it would've helped his ratings to the point where he beats Letterman, but it definitely would've helped introduce people to Conan.

Jay Leno didn't have to go up against a lot of cable shows either when he took over from Carson, after constant guest hosting in that spot either. He didn't enjoy lead ratings till almost 2 years either. Hmm, why didn't Jay give young talent the chance to guest host as he was given?
I wonder if Jay wasn't working behind the scenes back-stabbing as per his usual habit, to Conan so he could get his old slot back before Conan even took the chair. Did he threaten guests about appearing on Conan's show like him and Helen used to do back in the day, so they wouldn't appear on the competition...Jay knows how to win ratings, threaten the guests.

If Jay had any sort of decency he would refuse the show and let Conan keep it. This makes Leno look really bad.

the thing is

If you can't read what the guy is saying, oh forget. Go on believing your insane conspiracy theories that you have no backing for. Even if what I say was not true, AT LEAST I BACKED MY ARGUMENT UP. Where's your proof that Jay was forced out? Can you back that up with at least one article?

Conan may be leaving NBC but Leno is the BIGGEST LOSER on NBC. No class Leno, No class at all.

Conan, it's not Jay's fault. It's the networks fault.

"Call it the Leno effect. NBC's controversial decision to shift the late-night talk show host to 10 p.m. has been billed as a savvy business move that enabled NBC to substitute a low-cost talk show for expensive scripted dramas. But now it's playing havoc with many of NBC's more than 200 affiliates, where Leno's weaker "lead-in" is undermining audiences of 11 p.m. newscasts. News programs are crucial for local stations, which draw upon them for a third of their revenue."

Weak lead-ins for news, no lead-in for late show.

Where the hell were these "cheap shots" you speak of? He did no such thing. But I do agree that calling Jay's show a "comedy program" was offensive, because it's hardly funny.

The book,"The Late Shift", describes the sneaky maneuvers Leno used on both Johnny Carson and David Letterman to get the Tonight show.
He blamed his manager. After he was on the Tonight show for a few weeks, he gave up his manager to be fired and told NBC he had no idea what she was doing and told her he had no idea that NBC would fire her. What a SKUNK!

I am sick of hearing that Jay was pushed out. He wanted to retire. I remember the show after it was announced 5-6 years ago. He said he was ready. Jay also said a year ago that he didnt blame Bret Favre for changing his mind and not retiring....Jay is an ass for what he does with people. He is ruthless. He has screwed David Letterman and Conan. All you Jay lovers can look up his past and see what a snake he is.

Leno needs to stay in retirement....he is no longer worth the money...and not funny. He was canceled for a reason last year. Bringing his sorry bottom back was bad for NBC who is so desperate for ratings...they'll try crumby things.
Conan need fresh material...instead of trying to re-tread his old show....it's not working either.

They need to scrap the "Tonight Show" format....it's old and wheezing it's last legs with either of these guys anyway. It should go off into the "hall-of-fame" where it belongs....

Sorry if someone has already commented on this, but I agree with Nikki Finke. I don't think Conan is stepping down. I think the letter was telling NBC that they'll have to fire him if they want him to leave. That's why his reps and NBC brass were talking this afternoon.
