Conan's Royal Screw Up

1/13/2010 10:00 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Conan O'Brien may have a claim against NBC, but not because the network wanted to move his show to 12:05 AM.

We're now told Conan's contract never specified a guaranteed time period. If NBC wanted to run the show at 3:00 AM, Conan would have no recourse. We're told Conan's reps never even asked for a guaranteed time period when they negotiated his contract -- shocking, but true.

By contrast, we're told Jay Leno's deal specifically guarantees his 10:00 PM time period, so the network must negotiate a new deal with him before he moves back to 11:35 PM.

NBC did guarantee that Conan would host "The Tonight Show," and the network has been willing to make good on that promise.

As for Conan's legal position, his claim is a lot more tenuous than first reported to us. We're told Conan is arguing -- given the history of "The Tonight Show" -- there is an "implied" guarantee the show would begin at 11:35. Our sources say Conan's people met with NBC execs yesterday afternoon ... presumably to negotiate a settlement and an out.

Some of the high level people who oversee "The Tonight Show" are saying Conan has himself to blame -- at least in part -- for his failure. They say he refused to take notes from his bosses, saying "I do what I do."

Come on, do people really watch shows like the Tonight Show anymore? Really, these shows are so obsolete and superficial ... and I think most viewers see beyond all that now. The few that watch Leno and Letterman probably come home from work late, don't have cable, and turn on the tv for company.

Hea, folks, it's Pluto into Capricorn until the year 2023 and everything about our lives and entertainment will soon be changing! Let's put it this way, we won't have the interest in celebrities in the next couple of years like we do now.

Check out Gerald Celente and trends for the next few years. Very interesting and aligned with the whole Pluto into Capricorn thing.

Do none of you people remember how all this started? Leno never brought the BIG ratings they said he'll get in primetime. His show was horrible. As is Leno, he is a despicable man. Should have never gotten The Tonight Show to begin with. But all those years of sucking off Johnny Carson paid of for him.
Besides he's a huge rip off of Howard Stern!!!

Conan the sooner NBC gets rid of you the better for everyone. You have no one to blame but yourself. If you were as funny as you thought you were then there woulde have been no problem but the fact is the show lost millions of viewers when you took over. Join Lettermen at night. Both you and Letterman think you are the two funniest comedians on earth.

You HAD to have known that a BIG part of the pix that hadn't come out before was which of the 3 - Conan, Leno or NBC - had the best lawyer. Seems that Conan showed that he's #3 in yet another way.....

Who even finds Leno's lame "comedy" funny? Apparently nobody since his show bombed so bad. The only reason there were ratings for him on the Tonight show was all the old geezers that were used to watching it from back in Johnny's days. Since Leno's "comedy" is simpleton and easy to understand for the elderly they just left him on.

I always liked Lenos guests and Conans monologue and skits. This whole fiasco is a contrived set-up by Leno and NBC. Yes, the numbers are in. But I am so disgusted by how NBC is treating Conan. Disgusting. I'm following Conan.

Jay retired on his own no one took him off The Tonight Show.Jay is trying to look good in the media while screwing Conan he announced his own retirement and said he was giving Conan the job but now that his ratings are low he wants to run back and steal The Tonight Show.Jay Leno's jokes are bland and cheap his jokes cater to old people while Conan's jokes are wittier and edgier this isn't your grandparents Tonight Show anymore.Go Team Coco long live "the Solution"!!!!!!

People blameing conan for loseing viewers is his fault isn't really fair. The same thing happend with leno when he took over for carson. It takes time for people to accept change (more than a few weeks).

Leno is not funny never has been funny and never will be funny. the only real thing jay ever had was headlines and jay walking but those were funny because of moronic people not really because of jay.

But with that being said cocnan was alot more worth watching at his old show. I don't know if he fired some writers or what but the new tonight show just isn't funny that much. I don't know what happend but something got lost from the move to 1130 IMO for conan.

Either way i wish jay would just go away and let everyone else do there thing. Long live falon. We had bret farve michael jordan and now jay leno not willing to fade away and let new talent take the helm.

Jay Leno and NBC screwed it up for Conan. Everyone thought when Jay was leaving the Tonight Show he was retiring from TV to do stand up on occasion. Then he suddenly announces he'll be doing the same show at 10 pm. So essentially he just kept the Tonight Show and moved it to an earlier time -- everyone still thought of him as host of the Tonight Show. Here's my question: Did Conan know when he accepted the job that Jay would still be staying? I don't think so. He might have made a different choice had he known that. Conan is certainly funnier than that dirty old man Letterman -- all he does is bang his young employees and make jokes about raping young girls.

I'm betting Conan will come out ahead on this one.

not kooky

I think america is ready for a new late night format altogether.
It would be nice to see a revival of the old time variety show.
My dream late night show would include balloon animals, nursery rhymes, recipes, fortune telling, horoscopes, driving directions, and random weather reports.
A host with a red nose and big shoes would also be a nice touch.

The story just broke an hour ago. Sources close to Jay say he is actually furious with the way NBC is handling this because it makes him look like he is forcing Conan out. The sources say Jay is considering leaving the network with his head held high. TMZ GET ON TOP OF THIS STORY. NBC COULD BE SCREWED IF BOTH LEAVE.
