Kimmel's Brutal Leno Beatdown

On Jay's Show!

1/15/2010 11:15 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Jimmy Kimmel completely destroyed Jay Leno on his own show last night -- constantly ripping the talk show host apart for taking back the 11:35 PM time slot.

The one who disgusts me the most is Letterman. Of course he'd want Conan to have the spot. Conan he can beat in the ratings, not Leno! So it's not like he's some wonderful buddy rooting for an underdog. He's simply the same self-serving, obnoxious egomaniac he always was. And with the scandal that surrounded him not so very long ago, he should be the LAST person to be trying to come across as sanctimonious!

Last night's scornful attempt by Jimmy Kimmel to play with the big boys in the schoolyard, however, came across as little short of impotent. If it's considered a beat-down, then his weapon was a feather. When he was Kimmel's age, Jay was soo substantially wittier and laser-deadly with his zings. Even after all his time in late-night tv, Jimmy's still just an amateur. Pretty sad, actually.

Jay could have settled all of this, by just walking away. I guess his ego is bigger than his chin, so he would rather bump everyone else. Good thing we have a stnad up guy, like Conan who wouldn't do that to a 60 year old show, and Jimmy Falon.I'm happy Kimmel said what alot of us wanted to hear. Just wish he would have thrown in Douchebag someplace.

NBC Executives were the asses who decided that Conan would draw better advertising dollars than Jay at the Late Night Spot. Conan was an ass for "doing it my way" rather than following the advice of NBC when his ratings tanked, and for not having negotiated a better contract with NBC. Kimmel's presentation above was an attempt at a "Roast" in the Hollywood Friars Club tradition, not a "Beatedown," and was not terrible funny. I have seen Jimmy do better. Jay and Jimmy are both "good guys" and Conan and NBC are both asses.

You know, Jay asked the leading questions about all the hoop-la. I think Jay and Jimmy were funny during the 10 @ 10 spoof. I didn't find either one of them rude. I laughed out loud.

I know Jimmy didn't really know what questions were gonna be asked, but surely he had some of those quips ready for Jay. And Jay was expecting them.

Good for Jimmy for saying it right to Jay. Conan is funnier - Jay is a suck-a$$....I won't watch the Tonight Show if Jay takes it back, or many other NBC shows for that matter.

KUDOS to Jay for having Jimmy on
Jay isn't stupid-he knew what Jimmy's answers would be like and in the name of entertainment and comedy he had him on anyways!

I didn't see Letterman having any of his competition on ribbing him about his sex scandal did you?

the only upside to this whole mess is that it has created terrific jokes and better ratings for all of the night time comics on their shows-so a bit of an upside

everyone is tuning in to see what each one will say next-fun now, but soon it will start to wear thin

a lot or the younger people here might not know/remember the whole story here

1) when NBC decided to go with Jay over Letterman to succeed Carson when he chose to retire, Letterman was already a fixture on TV airing after Carson.

Leno was a stand-up comic who sometimes substituted for Johnny's nights off-so did Joan Rivers and a few others
so it naturally took a while for Leno to establish himself and get good ratings

Conan came with a built in audience to the Tonight Show hour but sadly didn't keep the ratings

2) in 2004 when Conan was negotiating with NBC he let it be known that if he wasn't going to host the Tonght Show he'd jump networks.

So NBC renewed his contract agreeing to 2009 as being when he'd get it. That meant that Jay had to agree to step aside (so he didn't decide out of thin air that he just wanted to retire at such a young age with a large following)

Leno graciously went on air discussing how he would "retire" from the show and hand it over to his deserving friend Conan- even had Conan on showing him support and great loyalty to the network that was pushing him out

He purposely did that so that when Conan took over he wouldn't have all negative press and controversy that he experienced years prior.

3) fast forward to 2009 and Leno is consistently beating Letterman in the ratings so NBC, so knowing that Leno would have a great offer from another network and become competition, it dawned on NBC that they had better figure out a way to to keep him and still honor what they negotiated with Conan years before

4) that's when they came up with the idea of Leno in Primetime.
NBC wasn't winning those ratings so they thought it was a worthwhile "experiment"

Leno's ratings were great when you compared them to the other late night audiences-so he held his own very well in that regard
But when you compared his ratings to the dramas on opposite him on the other networks at 10, they weren't as high naturally

Conan's ratings did not live up to hopes and expectations- he kept losing to Letterman

5) it's all about the $$$$
because of NBC trying to keep Conan from leaving in 2004, they sadly created their own domino effect downfall and ensuing disaster and controversy

so people should do some research before they spout off condemning Jay or Conan for the whole debacle

sad that NBC has ended up putting the 2 of them in this position with all the ensuing controversy-there is no villain here-both decent talented guys with different styles appealing to different audiences-that's why the 2 back to back at late night were such a winning combination for NBC

there should be heads rolling over at NBC for such a major screw-up and leaving 2 top talents hanging in the wind

they could at least make an official statement to explain how they got into this mess by trying to keep both of their major talents (in other words the ratings and $$ from the sponsors associated with the 2 shows) with their NBC family!!

Kimmel is an idiot and he is NOT funny - ever!!!!
Jay belongs on the 11.35 time slot for 1 hour as before. Has everyone forgotten how he was miles ahead of Letterman in no. of viewers for a long time? He deserves it and EARNED it and that's the end of it.
Conan should go back to the East coast where he belongs.

Zucker is counting on people tuning into Comcast cable shows if they leave any of the late night or NBC programming. Boycott Comcast/NBC....Jeff Zucker.

Leno sucks. He will not come back with the ratings he had because everyone with half a brain knows its really his fault there is this mess to begin with. He should have never mentioned retiring in the first place. He forced NBC to keep Conan, then when he realizes he wants to stay, NBC has to choose between an established host, and one starting out. Leno had horrible ratings when starting out, just like Conan, and had time to build an audience. NBC will be screwed in 5 years when Jay decides to leave and they have no replacement.
Big winner will be FOX, finally they can have a real host in late night.

As much as I loved the bit, I'm sure Leno scripted this. Letting Kimmel bash Leno, instead of Leno doing it himself, seemed like a good idea. Kimmel probably did it so Leno would leave him alone!
