TMZ Gets Jacked -- Camera Thief Busted on Tape

2/12/2010 10:40 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

This footage is frickin' insane!!!

Stolen camera: Click to watch
Some dude with a pair of brass cojones pulled a classic snatch-and-grab on a TMZ camera Thursday -- and it all went down right in front of an L.A. courthouse!!!

Our camera guy was shooting Dennis Hopper's lawyer when some crook snuck up from behind and yanked the camera right out of our guy's hand while the camera was rolling.

The camera recorded the whole thing as the scumbag went sprinting through a parking lot ... and ultimately ran right into another TMZ cameraman.

The perp panicked and put down the camera but continued to book it down the street on foot until he was long gone.

The whole thing was insane -- but if you recognize ol' Shifty Stickyfingers over there, call the police, stat.

This is classic!! It seemed more like a prank than anything else. If this becomes a trend, not only will TMZ get more hits (a must see), but they would also start cuffing cameras to their wrists....looking like 'special-ed' paparazzis.
"Thief" - you made my day...funny stuff. Your gigante brass ball held you back...I am gonna suggest aerodynamic balls for your next heist. It would be even funnier if you were laughing the entire time you were trying to get away.
Camera guy - You must be a fatass. No more cameras unless you can run, fatass!! "Run fatass, run!" I would love to interview you.

What's with all the racist morons bitching about Mexicans? Does TMZ moderate this in any way? I'm not so sure this should be an open forum for people to spew their hate.

I would also like to agree that the camera man is a real loser for calling 911 about a "possible theft" and "assault". Is it a crime to lie to 911 operators to use the police? There was no assault, but saying that will surely get the police involved.

Nice Piece of Hollywood swag. Been worth a thing or two on ebay. Do you guys put the little TMZ signs on the cameras?

I have to agree with some of these posters, It was a bit lame for the guy to call the fuzz. I hope you put him on TV just to bust his chops for sounding like a complete Dork.

The cameraman needs to report the mugging / theft to LAPD, contrary to what other dunce-like posters have posted. Firstly, if the camera was damaged or scratched in any way for insurance and continued employment purposes, and secondly perhaps the LAPD will note the thief hanging about other live shots and be able to apprehend him. The cameras are EXPENSIVE to the max and bring good money on the stolen fenced item market.
