Arrested 'Flavor' Star -- 'I Did What I Had To Do'

2/21/2010 2:24 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Hotlanta -- the "Flavor of Love" star who got cuffed in Georgia last month for alleged child cruelty -- claims she did what she had to do ... but her son was never harmed in the violent incident that got her arrested.

Hotlanta -- aka 29-year-old Nicole Essigmann (right) -- tells TMZ that she never laid a hand on her 4-year-old son. The whole incident was because her baby daddy -- a guy named Jerry Robinson -- got her mother (left) in a headlock.

According to Nicole, she was going with her mom -- Jill Essigmann -- to pick up her son from Robinson's home. When her mom went in to get the child, Nicole claims there was some kind of physical altercation and Robinson emerged with her mother in a headlock.

Nicole tells TMZ: "I did what I had to do ... Anybody in my shoes would have done the same thing if they saw their mom in a headlock. I laid the smackdown."

According to Nicole, the reason for the child abuse charge is because her son witnessed the violent incident.

Both Nicole and her mother were arrested on two counts of simple battery. Nicole was also charged with child cruelty. The case is still being investigated.

The cops are real idiots, especially when the kids are biracial, they don't like that. The cops are going to teach the white girl a lesson for making babies with black men. So what, she like black men, thats her problem. All of her baby daddies are black and her kids are black.

Children are very negatively affected by witnessing violence, it's been proven over and over again. Children who witness domestic violence are more likely to grow up and abuse their own spouses. They are also more likely to be depressed, antisocial, and exhibit bullying behavior. Watching your dad beat on your mom can have a huge impact on your life.

What about the dude who had a woman in a headlock? He wasn't charged with anything? That's assault. Did the kid see that?

Shannon, domestic violence was already illegal. Adding another law on top of it just leads to unintended consequences like this.

Using physical force to defend your mother should not be prosecutable.

I live in GA now originally from CA. GA has some back wood laws out here. You can marry your first cousin out here but if the police come out on what they think is a domestic violence call. Somebody has to go to jail. And the really jacked up part about that is they usally take the wrong person. GA suck's donkey balls sometime with the laws out here.

If anyone would really take the time to realize and understand painful situations that good people go through they would see this as the terrible slander that it is. How many times in your own life has things been misconstrued and twisted to meet the need and benefits of others? After reading the following comments I am honestly nauseous to think that people would actually believe these terrible statements about a beautiful person. You all need to take the sty out of thy own eye before pointing out the sty in anyone else s eye, -bible- enjoy!!!

I am unable to watch the Marriage Ref, 30 Rock and for the first time since I was probably 12 years old, the Academy Awards.

Alec Baldwin's abusive behavior of his daughter Ireland when she was 12, and now again when she is 14 is something we can not support.

The entertainment industry must stop rewarding their talent that abuses children.
