Scotty Lago -- Apologize and Go ... Or Just Go!

2/21/2010 1:00 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

If Scotty Lago didn't volunteer to leave the Olympics, he'd have been told to leave by the U.S. Olympic Committee ... this according to sources close to Lago.

Lago offered up an apology after a mildly suggestive photo of him -- using his bronze medal for snowboarding to score chicks -- popped up on the Internet. He agreed to leave the Olympic Village on his own accord, but sources close to Lago tell TMZ he received an ultimatum from the U.S. Olympic Committee: either say you're sorry and go ... or get ejected from the Olympic Village.

As for when we might hear from Lago himself ... we're told he's in a "blackout period" -- meaning he can't talk about the incident at all until March 3.

A call to the USOC was not returned.

TMZ - thanks to you this boarder (doin what boarders do) is in trouble. What happened to the good old days like when the Kennedy's were scorin all over the globe, but the news media turned a blind eye. Hope scotty rebounds with more air after this.

Snowboarding should never have become an Olympic sport.

Curling is the greatest sporting event ever!

THANKS FOR THE PHOTO. KIDS DO STUPID, PERIOD. TMZ, DID YOU THINK IT WOULD GO THIS FAR? ONE THING TO PRINT GOSSIP AND STUFF, BUT DID YOU KNOW IT CAN TOTALLY DESTROY A DREAM? HOW CAN WE BE "TEAM USA" SO TO SPEAK IF WE TURN ON EACH OTHER AND PUBLICIZE IT FOR $$$$$? OH YEAH RIGHT, I FORGOT, THE AMERICAN DREAM (4$$$$$).

HE SHOULD BE REPRIMANDED; EMBARRASSMENT ALWAYS WORKS. DIDN'T HAVE TO BE SENT HOME...

So, here's a question and an opinion - - what if Scotty was scheduled to compete in more events? USOC would have still forced him to leave (whether you agree with that decision or not) and would not the anger partially shift to TMZ for distributing the uncaptioned photos worldwide? That latter anger is not conducive to TMZ in the market place.

TMZ, in their sensationalistic style, should report the news (not make it or make it happen) and by this time in their web site's history, realize the consequences of their actions. A bit of self-awareness of their actions (besides Scotty's) and self-control (besides Scotty's) would be a nice balance between revenue generation from internet hits and escalating the ramifications of Scotty's actions to a higher level. This time it deprived him of further positive Olympic memories but next time it could cost an Olympian the chance to compete. All parties - - think about it.

silly old bugger

Skateboarders, snowboarder, both the same....doper dropouts, losers, total jerks, brain the size of a pea, kept below the belt...so it was natural for this moron to take that nice shiny thing he found somewhere, hang it over his crotch and hope it would attract another loser who would service him. Retards, low life beasts.

Lighten up? No way. Slutty behavior isn't appropriate. Do you want your kids to look up to this smut from someone who is supposed to be a role model? Sexual addiction is a serious problem and sex doesn't need to be a part of every message and image we see. Start TAKING A STAND for more moral behavior or start saving up for your kids' sexual addiction therapy. Would you think this photo was harmless and funny if it were your husband?

These athletes are at these games representing the USA. They have an orientation class on behavior and sign agreements stating such. If you can't behave like the USOC would like you too, then don't go to the Olympics. For 2 weeks out of 4 years, I don't think it's too much to ask to act like an adult. It is a shame that this kid made a mistake, but he did. Let's hope he learns from it.

I just read dozens of comments blaming TMZ for posting this photo and "getting poor Scotty in trouble". HUH? Was TMZ there forcing him to degrade himself and the Olympic medal? No,it obviously was Lago's fault. TMZ simply reported what happened. He got himself into trouble by his actions. You all need to grow up and learn that you have a responsibility for your own actions. Your Mommy & Daddy may have taught you to blame everyone else when you were bad but it's time for someone to stand up say that is entirely the wrong attitude. If you screw up, pay up.

Lago getting photographed by TMZ was a mistake; but he is being singled out, there are other athletes who are well known for their extraciricular activities but haven't been caught on film that made it to press. I also like the double standard; he was caught in the moment with a crowd of people,if it was a professional photo shoot would've it been acceptable? On NBC's olympic site there are slideshows of the athletes. One in particular shows American Allison Baver(short track) in multiple poses of a suggestive nature & various stages of undress. This is just one example...maybe Lago should've posed in his boxers instead then he would've been in the closing ceremonies.

The olympic committee needs to stop with the crap and TMZ should have ignored the crap. But, why do that...............gready people gotta make a buck!! Scott is a kid..............just having fun. It never occured to him it would perceived to be more than fun. So now TMZ assists the committe in destroying this talented guys career.

STICK TO JOHN MAYER........HE DESERVES WHAT HE GETS. OR IS THAT A LITTLE TOO CLOSE TO HOME FOR YA!!!

He knew the rules ahead of time.... that is if he can read. So no whining now over the results of classless imature behaviour. The Olympics and your country should be shown respect. As for the groupie woman... pathetic.

again if I was him I would be seeing about seeking legal action against tmz.

These guys work very hard for years and what TMZ did was not right and yet we have yet to see an apology issued from TMZ. I guess tmz does not understand hard work, all you people do is stalk people for a living and ruin there dreams

This is not the first time they have done something like this, when Britney Spears was due in court it was on the downlow and she was all set to appear but nooo tmz leaked the information and it was a freaking frenzy at the court house so they had to reschedule.
