Brittany Murphy -- 109 Mystery Pills

2/27/2010 4:00 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Brittany Murphy obtained a prescription for 120 hydrocodone (Vicodin) pills 11 days before her death .... and the day she died there were only 11 pills left in the bottle ... TMZ has learned.

What's more we've learned the L.A. County Coroner's Office cannot locate the doctor who prescribed the pills and they are on the hunt to find him.

According to the Coroner's report on Murphy's death, the pills -- which we've learned were prescribed specifically to Murphy -- were supposed to be taken a maximum of 4 times a day. Yet 109 of the pills were missing from the bottle when she died. If Brittany had maxed out on the prescription, only 44 pills should have been missing.

So why were so many pills prescribed in the first place? That's what the Coroner wants to know. The doctor's name on the pill bottle is Cohen, but so far the Coroner can't locate him. A member of the Coroner's Office went to Brittany's husband, Simon Monjack, to assist them in locating the doc, but we're told Simon was no help.

The cause of Brittany Murphy's death is listed as "accidental" -- the result of pneumonia, along with prescription and over-the-counter drugs.

UPDATE: Simon Monjack contacted TMZ and says the hydrocodone prescription was not Brittany Murphy's. He says it was written for either Sharon Murphy, Brittany's mom, or himself -- he said he was unsure.

Monjack also says Dr. Cohen did not write any prescriptions for Brittany.

As for the 11 hyrdrocodone pills that remained in the prescription bottle for 120 pills -- Monjack says yesterday morning, after we published this story, he and Sharon located 73 pills from that prescription.

Anyone who gets vicodin and kolonopin prescriped to them are obviously in for a heart attack. Especially when someone is popping 4 vikes at one sitting. Thats crazy. Brittany Murphy had no love, not even her mother loved her nor her husband. Same with Casey Johnson noone loved her as well. Noone cares in hollywood they all just sit there and watch each other die it makes me sick. Glad Monjack died tho he is the biggest douchebag. Thats Karma Simon.

Some of you people are clueless!!!
Norco is just a brandname for Vicodin, the strength is 10/325. 10MG of Hydrocodone 325mg of APAP. Lortab is 7.5/500 could also be 7.5/750, you can also get 7.5/300. It comes in many different dose levels. The weakest is the 5/500. Not really sure about the Ibuprophen mix. I have had many different types of Vicoden with the Tylenol in it. Percocet is a diff drug, it's oxycodone and also comes in different strenghts 5/325, 7.5/325 & 10/325. 120 pills is not all that much, especially once you are on it for a couple of months, you become tolerant and can easily up the amount of pills you take.

I have 3 bulging discs & severe arthritis in my spine. I have MRI's to prove it. When I was going to pain management, I was prescribed 90 pills a month of the Lortabs 7.5/500...that is 1 pill every 8 hrs. Hardly enought to fully control the pain. My primary doc now has me on a very good regimine. I get the extended oxycodone (OxyContin) 20mg's- 3 times a day (90 pills per month) and I also get the immediate release (Roxicodone) 20mg's- 3 times a day (90 pills per month) This has controlled my pain soo much better, I am actually comfortable most of the day. I do realize it gonna be really really hard coming off of the stuff. The point is, once your body gets adjusted to ANY strength of opiate medication, you need more and more to get that euphoric effect.

Oh I forgot to add, my doc also gives me 15 5mg valium a month, I am to take 1/2 a pill before bed. You have to be really careful when mixing the opiate med's w/ benzodiapines. I'm afraid that is what probably did Brittany in. Vicodin alone shouldn't kill you, unless you are just starting off on the medication and you take a BOAT load of it. Once you starting mixing the pain meds w/the benzo' can become very hazardous to your health. You need to know what your limits are. I very very rarely double up on my meds, I take one pill at a time and wait..if I feel I need another pill to control the pain, then I will take one, but I do not have a death wish, therefore I try not to take too much at once.
