Gabourey Sidibe -- Beauty Comes in All Sizes

3/16/2010 10:15 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Gabourey Sidibe -- Beauty Comes in All SizesGabourey Sidibe might have a weight problem, but it doesn't mean she's unhealthy ... this according to the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance (NAAFA). Yes, that's a real group.

As we first reported, a weight loss company is reaching out to the Oscar-nominated "Precious" star in an effort to help her lose weight and get healthy.

But according to a spokeswoman for NAAFA, being heavy doesn't always mean being unhealthy. Peggy Howell tells TMZ, "You cannot tell by looking at a person if they are healthy. Fat does not equal disease and thin does not equal healthy."

Howell also said NAAFA does not encourage people to get fat or stay fat and reminded us, "Achievements come in all sizes."

So many more comments need redressing here... "People ate real sugar and butter in the 50s, but people weren't fat then. I Wonder why? Could it be that we;ve gotten lazy?"

Well, first off, are you aware of some special health drive that was going on back then? There were fewer gyms, the media culture was dictating less to us back then, jogging was seen as the activity of freaks, and we were driving then just as much as we are now. Now, I will admit that there were more labor jobs (which technology and outsourcing has diminished), kids used to go out an play more (the Xboxes and sexual predator scares took care of that), and people were probably eating better 'cause wives were staying home and cooking better meals. I mean they had all day to do it.

Nowadays, the majority of us workers (I've often in my life worked 80 hours a week) don't have the time to cook fancy when we come home. Spending an hour cooking something I'm gonna down in twenty is just not attractive after twelve hours of administering to others' crazy needs. And an apple and some cottage cheese just ain't gonna cut it as a comfort from being yelled at all day for 10 an hour. Then you're gonna ask people to work another four just so they can be tight, and get a little more sex in their lives? It's all a matter as to what's important to you. And sex ain't that important, in the long run; let's face it, it disappears after two years of marriage anyway. We can all live without it, and in fact the world would be better for it. Too many people already on this planet. Only my opinion, of course…

What I'm getting at here is that, essentially, the debate over fat is really the debate over classism. Those who are thin obviously can afford the time to keep themselves fit, because they get paid more, and thus have more free time to commit to the effort. They also have more cash to eat properly when going out, or have more time to cook properly. All this, this makes the thin sexually attractive, because it also means that they're financially secure, and who doesn't want that?

While the poor, they often don't have the time to eat right, and have such miserable lives that they often look in the wrong places--like the cubboard--for some comfort. They don't have the time to spend on exercise; not with two jobs that rarely have any give between their hourly requirements. ANd heap on to this that the poor often have a kid or two, and no money for daycare--this means even less time for this exercise thing. So they get fat. And this is why fat is unattractive. It's not the fat per se; in the fifties, women like Marilyn Monroe would have been called fat today, and would have been hectored into looking like the freakily skinny Christina Ricci, who totally was meant to be a little heavier than she is. Jackie Gleason would have been told to drop pounds (he lived to be 70), Orson Welles (who hit his 70s), Jonathan Winters (also lived to his 70s), Charles Laughton (70s), and on and on. There have been plenty of times in past humanity in which fat was considered attractive; this was usually in lean economic times, when someone who was well-fed was seen as being rich, because they could afford FOOD! So whatever invective you're gonna throw at me ("You're crazy! Fat is totally gooey and disgusting"), believe me, you could have just as easily found yourself born into a time or a place where fat was considered attractive (like in latin american countries, or in the Maori tribes in New Zealand). But, because you're here, right here, right now, and you've never really though about it this way, you insult-spewing posters on here, you think fat is disgusting. What you're REALLY reacting to, in that lizard part of your brain, deep down far away from what you conciously know, is that fat means worthless, poor, lazy and untrustworthy. But things just aren't that simple. And we haven't even gotten into the hyper-thyroid epidemic, or the additives in our food! This could easily be the problem behind the obesity epidemic, not that people have gotten lazy. I know that's part of it. But Look into the other parts.

She is so fat she can't open her eyes all the way. One fluke movie role does not negate the years of overeating and abuse to her body. I'm sorry but she is fat and ugly. That is the truth and nothing can change it unless she puts the fork down.

This girl is not big boned. She is MORBIDLY OBESE. WAY more than 100 pounds overweight, more like 150-200 overweight. Not to mention she's disgusting to look at. I'd hate to be sitting across the table from her and have to watch her eat.

Does anyone remember what she said on the red carpet? Let me remind you: "If fashion were porn, this dress would be the money shot!". So, she's not only very very fat and very very ugly, but she's crude as well. Her looks wouldn't bother me so much if she would act like a lady.

Gabby is a big fat liar!!
Methinks the lady doth protest too much.
She is trying to not convince us but herself.

Fat is unhealthy!

I was thin for most of my life then gained 85 lbs because of various reasons.
My Dr. told me I may be healthy at the time but not for long if I remained overweight. I was at risk for diabetes and hypertension.
I did not want to become diabetic and or get hypertension which my Dr. said would happen if I did not the lose weight.
I lost the weight it was very hard and took months on a Dr. supervised diet but I did it!
I was miserable when I was fat and it is painful to lug around all that extra weight and I have NEVER met a fat woman who thought she was beautiful when fat.

I have sympathy for Gaby. She must have suffered in some way mentally to want to get so big.
I have met women who were abused and got huge as a deterrent. They thought the weight would protect them.

No "normal" women gets that huge for no reason.
I suspect Gabby has suffered in some way. I hope she gets the professional help she needs.

She is wrong to tell people fat is okay.

There is an epidemic of obesity related illness in this country such as diabetes etc.
If she wants to stay grossly obese and die young fine but do not lie and say being grossly obese is healthy or okay.
Because she is famous now and some may people look up to her they may follow her bad advice and could die for doing so.

It's sad how many people voted that "fat" equaled "unhealthy." It's even sadder that many people won't realize that "thin" equals "healthy."

I am overweight, and my blood pressure is fine, my cholesterol is fine, my blood sugar levels are all FINE. But when I tell people this, they refuse to believe me. I get check-ups all the time, yet apparently I'm just an ugly fat cow who doesn't know health from a cookie.
Meh. Whatever.

Mrs. D.

I knew a beautiful (mentally) young lady who had her master's in economics, was married and had a young child. She was also morbidly obese and one day just had a heart attack and died at like 38. I was shocked, but then not shocked. IMHO and experience, fat is NOT healthy.

Mrs. D.

I have relatives (by marriage) that are morbidly obese. One was 11-yrs-old and got winded walking around at Disney. Her feet also hurt before any else's. Now that she's married, my son cannot sell her a life insurance policy because she doesn't qualify. Healthy....NOT.
