Gabourey Sidibe -- Beauty Comes in All Sizes

3/16/2010 10:15 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Gabourey Sidibe -- Beauty Comes in All SizesGabourey Sidibe might have a weight problem, but it doesn't mean she's unhealthy ... this according to the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance (NAAFA). Yes, that's a real group.

As we first reported, a weight loss company is reaching out to the Oscar-nominated "Precious" star in an effort to help her lose weight and get healthy.

But according to a spokeswoman for NAAFA, being heavy doesn't always mean being unhealthy. Peggy Howell tells TMZ, "You cannot tell by looking at a person if they are healthy. Fat does not equal disease and thin does not equal healthy."

Howell also said NAAFA does not encourage people to get fat or stay fat and reminded us, "Achievements come in all sizes."

Obesity is unhealthy and she is obese. And a really bad role model for little girls. Look around, there are more obese people than ever before. This is not one of those subjective, could be bad, could be good type things, obesity is never good. Rather than promoting acceptance of this unhealty state, let reality rule, it is unhealty, really affects medical issues such as diabeties, heart disease, back strain not to mention costs taxpayer billions every year. This isn't a personal choice its a compulsion and the person is addicted to food.

No offense to her but for the past 30 years the AMA has been preaching about the evils of being over weight.

This just proves you can SPIN anything in America.

This is just plain BS.

She must be one of those girls who was told how beautiful she was her whole life by her mom but never learned much else. It's great to accept and love yourself no matter what, but to not realize that you're killing yourself with food and drink is plain ignorant. All the little girls who are told "you're a princess" and similar drivel and going to grow up the same.

If Oprah really cared she'd share one or two of her dietitians with Gaby. I'm sure Oprah could get through to her if anyone could. She's like her Jesus.

Extremes either way are unhealthy. Obesity will cause health problems. The extra fat causes stress on vital organs as well as stress on joints. Your heart and lungs can not handle the stress of all of that extra weight. They may have a shot if she was active...but this girl is far from active. It's a simple proven fact not to mention obvious common sense. Being slightly overweight or being "chunky" is not the same as being morbidly obese.

The Big is Beautiful mentality is just as bad as the catwalk models. I personally do not think either are beautiful because all I see are people with serious mental and physical health issues.

Hope she gets some help. Not losing weight to be thin...losing fat to be at a healthy weight.

Okay, let's just round up all the fat people and kill them...herd them like cattle into a pit and shoot 'em. That's what all you people want to do. Fat people are the only types of people it's okay to be totally uncivil to these days, and it's all because "you caaaaaree." Screw off and take care of your own selves. By the way, there are three body types: the mesomorph, the endomorph, and the ecdomorph--that is, the skinny, the muscular and the fat. If one body type wants to become the other, they can, but they are going to have to work at it 24/7. Proof: you know those skinny people who say they can eat twelve pizzas and never gain a pound? There ya go. Study up and get with it, you jerks like statistics so much. Ya never read a stat in your lives. You just like gaining your power and esteem any way you can. Rant ended.

Why hasn't Michelle Obama spoken up? Her latest platform is Obesity, specifically childhood obesity. There seems no question that Gabourey Sidibe was an obese child to now be not only obese but dangerously, morbidly obese and well beyond fat. While those simply fat might be healthy, those morbidly obese are NOT by definition. Those that pretend otherwise are only enabling her and she will land in an early grave. This reminds me of the Emperor's New Clothes story, with many pretending everything is just fine. It isn't.

Gabby passed up unhealthy long time ago.The body odor along with rashes between the rolls of fat and damage to her heart are some of the main problems.

I feel so bad for this woman. Who are we to sit here at our computers and judge her or to even be reading an article about her weight. I think its disgusting how the media is allowed to go there. To use a national platform to discuss her weight it appalling. I feel so bad for her. Can any of you imagine how she must be feeling right now knowing these articles are being written about her without her permission. That must be so humilating and embarrassing to her. I say leave her alone and BACK-OFF.

Stop writing these cruel articles and then allowing for discussion with these comments. Its none of our business, and it certainly isn't any weight lose program's business to use her this way. They say they are getting alot of calls from people just by mentioning her. I say Gabourey get a good lawyer and sue them ! Sue the publications that are writing these things about you, sue the company that is now making money off of you and having the gaul to do this without your permission. I say sue them all Gabourey.what they are doing is cruel, mean, uncalled for, and certainly slander.

I'm sure this woman knows how much she weighs, I'm sure she knows what she looks like and to say she could get an Oscar if she only loses the weight. WTF ! The fact that she was nominated was based on her acting skills and her lose should have nothing to do with her weight. I feel so bad for her and this unncessary bashing.

Gabourey lose the weight if you want to lose the weight, not because the media and weight lose programs are discussing your weight. If you are happy with what you weigh then don't do anything. But certainly I'd be talking to a lawyer if this was happening to me.

the argument may hold up for a short while that although she is obese she is still healthy-

but longterm if she were to go through her entire life at this weight you will begin to see diabetes, blood pressure, heart problems etc.

not to mention problems with her knees etc.

so maybe healthy now.... but eventually, obviously, not

No one had to write an article about her size. All they had to do was take a picture. The discussions were sure to follow.
As someone who has worked in the Operating Room I can speak from experience. Yes, she could benefit from barriatric surgery if A) she is HEALTHY enough to undergo anesthesia, B) She wants to lose the weight and C) she is able to lose 10% of her weight without surgery. The last one is to prove that she can lose weight and that she is motivated.
She may weigh that much now and be healthy because of her age. But the body will not overlook this as it ages. Clogged arteries will lead to a blood clot which at best will cause a heart attack. At worse, the clot will end up in her lungs and KILL her. That much weight is also leading up to high blood pressure which will thicken her heart, making blood flow nearly impossible. I could go on but these two factors alone cannot be ignored.
Besides, if you have ever operated on someone that heavy, it is terrible for the surgeon to have to dig through all that fat to get to the appendix or anywhere in the body. It's like digging through butter. The instruments get slippery and they shift. No, being that heavy is no good at all.

Well there is no such thing as "healthy" fat. That myth has been tested and over the last few years proven to be false. Seems that 10 pounds (over or above the ideal weight) is the so called "magic" number where more then that and you will start to increase your risk of having health problems.
The extra load alone destroys the joints and stresses the heart. Having that "belly fat" is an indicator of visceral fat and that's basically one of the worse kinds since that's the fat that collects on the organs.

While people can be "big boned" that doesn't give license to be this overweight.

As most say, it's more about health then looks. It's just not right to encourage this kind of weight. Staying healthy can take a lot of effort for many but that's the way it is. Exercise sucks, takes time and is a general PITA but that is what's necessary. On the other hand it really doesn't take too much time even 1 hour 3-4 times a week is all many need in conjunction with not over eating.

A little reading and you'd be surprised at how many different but effective ways there are to get that cardio and weight lifting in to lose or maintain your weight.

It comes down to choices. You choose to be fat or not. The genetics argument/ excuse doesn't work either.

It's crap too. True people can have the genetics to be fat but that doesn't mean you will be or that you'll always have those few extra pounds. It just means that you have to be a bit more diligent in what you eat and your activity level but again, that's not an excuse to sit, eat and do nothing.

If you don't over eat and stay active, regardless of genetics you'll not be over weight. It's a choice.

Fat means you're not moving enough. Not moving = not healthy.
Just ask anyone who's been heavy and lost the weight; they feel better!

What gives us the right? The fact that she's put herself out there. ALL actors and actresses are scrutinized about the way they look. It's part of the job, so get off your high horse. It's perfectly acceptable to point out that she's morbidly obese--it's not a secret. This country is raising an entire generation that is destined to have terrible health problems due to their unhealthy choices. It's ridiculous to suggest a person this size might be healthy. She could die right this minute at age 26, forget kids and grandkids. That ain't happening at this rate. Being mean is one thing and being honest another. I'm being honest.
