UFC Fighter

Minor Procedure on Brain

3/26/2010 8:44 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

UFC fighter Thiago "Pitbull" Alves will undergo a minor outpatient surgery on Wednesday to correct an irregularity in his brain.

TMZ spoke with Alves moments ago, who told us, "I went and saw a specialist this morning who told me I need to have the minor procedure." We're told the procedure will be done in New York.

Alves says he expects to be sidelined from fighting for three weeks -- but expects to be back in the gym in two. We asked Alves if he thought a blow to the head from his recent fight with Georges St-Pierre may have caused his condition and he told us, "I don't think so."

TMZ also spoke with UFC president Dana White who told us, "He'll be back ... it's all good."

Pitbull -- who took this photo moments ago -- is expected to hold a news conference sometime later today at Sazon restaurant in NY.

This guy has got the worst health insurance I have ever heard of.
OUTPATIENT BRAIN SURGERY??? Is the doctor just going to do it on the golf course? I'm sorry, but if I ever have brain surgery I want at least one week in the hospital and a note from my doctor saying I don't have to go to work anymore. If he can walk out of the hospital an hour after brain surgery maybe he is THE ultimate fighter.

you guys are clueless. 1. This damage was likely caused during training. 2. Fighters tend to take more hits in training than they do in actual fights. 3. Rules are already in place to protect the fighters. 4. MMA is less dangerous of a sport than boxing. 5. Half of you sound like you've never witnessed an event and are commenting based on your childish desire to degrade everything.

I am not aware of ANY procedure that is done to the brain that is minor. Can you imagine the scandal that would erupt if this guy had a brain injury in the wring after this operation? Even if the injury was not related to his procedure? Way too much of a real and public relations liability.

I can't help but notice how the poker sponser seems to be photo-shopped in. Even the Tapout logo on the hat in the center seems to have been moved. Very distracting to a very serious story.

Come on!

People, this is nothing but a scam! TMZ, please stop reporting this nonsense. To further my frustration, I noticed this stuff was promoted on the TMZ t.v. show. It looks all to much like their is some type of financial agreement going on to promote this stuff. TMZ, sometimes to much is not good. If there is nothing their, no need to make some of these postings some times. "Oh, this could be career ending, ummm, sometimes thses things are wrong, he is good to go." Credibility should mean something sometimes. I have lost all respect for this wanna be mainstream past time (UFC).

Thiago Alves tested positive for a diuretic Spironolactone in early 2007.

The athletic commissions allege Spironolactone is used to mask testing for Anabolic Steroids.

Looking at photos of early Alves fights, he is clearly using anabolic steroids.
