Aside from all of the religious/dogmatic/reactionary nonsense that continuously crops up whenever the subject is sexual orientation or transgendering, ("god" doesn't have anything to do with the sex of a given individual. That is determined by chromosomes. We all start out essentially female, and the the addition of a Y chromosome from the male sperm makes a male embryo [XY], while an additional X chromosome creates a female [XX]. There is nothing deific about it), it is true that sexual reassignment rarely seems to bring fulfillment or happiness. Fully reassigned individuals do have a higher than normal incidence of depression, suicide attempts and successful suicide.

No matter what surgical procedures or hormonal treatments are employed, the basic chromosomes (XX or XY) cannot be changed in the human genome, so, genetically, the individual remains their original sex. There are people who are born with different chromosomal combinations, and reproductive organs of both sexes, who require actual gender assignment either at birth or later in life. I have not heard that Chaz Bono had this sort of condition.

If someone wants to live their life as the opposite sex of which he/she was born, it is not my problem, nor do I have an issue with it. I do not see it as a moral dilemma. What disturbs me is the obvious clinical probability that many of these people are suffering from a deeper issue of personal misery and self-hatred (evinced by the startlingly high suicide rate after transgendering) that is NOT gender-based, but that they have linked to gender through some event, series of events, trauma, or other element of their upbringing. Before entering the final phases of surgical sexual reassignment, most applicants are carefully psychologically scrutinized and tested, but it seems that even with such cautions, too many are hindered rather than helped by the attainment of their dream.

I hope that Chaz is happy and remains content with his new life. He is fully adult, and can make his own decisions. Maybe it will work out.
