Slipknot 911 -- 'Hypodermic Needle Next to His Bed'

5/26/2010 4:10 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

The hotel employee who discovered the body of Slipknot bassist Paul Gray on Monday told the 911 operator he noticed a hypodermic needle and a bottle of pills in the musician's hotel room when he found the body.

** warning -- the audio contains graphic content **

In the 911 call, obtained by TMZ, the employee -- a maintenance worker at the Iowa hotel -- tells the operator that he suspects Paul died of a "drug overdose" and that it appeared that Paul had been in the room for "a while."

The employee also told the 911 operator that Paul's mother had called the hotel earlier in the day because she couldn't get a hold of her son.

Cops are still investigating Paul's death. Officials have stated that the death doesn't appear to be the result of foul play.

um, excuse me, number 33 response, it was way past a minute before any of that was asked by the operator, so don't say, " to everyone upset about the response time"

No one knows right now if it was drugs. The autopsy was inconclusive. This is a sad passing. I don't care for the music but they don't cater to my generation. This band had the right idea to wear the masks because they could also have personal lives without being harassed and hounded. My thoughts go out to his pregnant wife, his family, his band mates and fans.

I try not to judge people or spout out rediculous statements about drug users, for as a youngster, I did many different mind altering drugs. But the tragedy here is that nobody ever learns from these thimgs. So many have died from drug overdoses, and I'm not exactly sure if this is the case here, but when you see it first hand, you have to think about your own mortality. I went to the funeral for Hillel Slovack, original guitar player for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who died from an overdose, and some of his friends that very night were shooting up. It disgusted me so much, that I stepped away from drugs and alcohol.

I think about what great music some of these musicians, like Hendrix and Morrison and Cobain, could have created had drugs not been included in their final days. It saddens me to know that there will be many others whose end will come at the point of a needle or from the bottom of a bottle. What a waste.

I'm a crazy person...

Dear #36 response: 911 deals with "real" emergencies all day long...all week long..all year long. Without break. What is clearly "the end of the world as YOU know it" is "just another O.D." to the 911 dispatcher. I'm sure Paul was a great guy blah...blah...blah... He was also dead when the janitor found him. Can we please reserve "resurrecting a shrine" calls for the fans and not criticize an emergency service established for "emergencies"?

CCC, Sad that you had to witness something like that. Even if it happens all around a person they still have the attitude that it will never happen to them.. Congratulations on being sober :)

CCC..yes,i agree with what u r saying,sadly..the otherside of it is that alot of the great music is written BECAUSE they r stoned out of their minds..its just a viscious circle of addiction.

why does the 911 operator not sound worried? AND, why does he keep asking the same questions. sounds like he needs better training.

#36... although we know the person in question was deceased, he could have been in a comatose state or had some type of medical condition that made his extremities appear purple, there are conditions as such and the EMPHASIS of 911 is to get someone there to make the determination, you don't take anyone's word that someone is dead, only a DOCTOR makes the call unless they are in multiple decapitated or such. Don't stand up for that incompetent 911 operator, he needs to be re-trained of fired.

Funny how people say...take time for prayers for his family..his daughter...etc..IF the dude would of thought about his Family and his daughter..he wouldn't of basically killed himself with drugs...think about that...too many peopple think of themselves and their gratification and not their that BS that abusement76 spouts is old and tired and pointless drivel.

To Post #42 Lady G - Thank you. I know you are taking flack on this site with your earlier comment, but you are entitled to your opinion. Don't ever let anyone take your freedom of speech away from you, and don't let them try to change your mind by calling you names. The fact is that drugs suck, and although they are something that is really hard to quit, if you don't have a strong will to do it, then you don't want to quit. Unfortunately for this man, the results was death.

That was the WORST 911 operator EVER!!!

My two cents ;)

It's not a judgment when somebody chooses drugs over their own family and's a bunch of crap! I hate when people can't pull their head out of their a$$e$ to grow up and live right
