UCLA Legend John Wooden Dies

6/4/2010 11:50 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

John Wooden, the most successful basketball coach in NCAA history, died of natural causes today ... he was 99 years old.

Wooden won 10 national championships at UCLA in the '60s and '70s -- more than earning his legendary nickname, the Wizard of Westwood.

University officials said Wooden died at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center where he had been hospitalized since last week.

Wooden coached future Hall of Fame players like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Bill Walton -- and his Bruins teams are recognized as one of sport's greatest dynasties.  He won 7 NCAA Championships in a row from 1967 to 1973.
The Wizard is in the Hall of Fame as a player and a coach.

Mr. Wooden was and always will be the embodiment of character and values that made this the greatest country in the world. If we are ever going to regain that status, we should all look to Mr. Wooden for leadership.

ummm this isn't about Kobe Bean Bryant. As much I dislike the Lakers and root against them the majority of the time,I respect Kobe on and off the court. He is one of the most "worldly" athletes in any sport today. Most likely a top 10 pro athlete in terms of work ethic towards his craft and that was one of things Coach Wooden preached. Yes, Kobe made a mistake in having consensual sex with that lady in CO, but his crime was really just cheating on his wife. People make mistakes and people shouldn't carry the stigma of one issue.

RIP Mr. 10 championships
