Jesse Jackson -- Cavs Owner a 'Slave Master'

7/12/2010 7:55 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Jesse Jackson has come to the defense of LeBron James -- even though no one asked him to -- and compared Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert to a "slave master."

In a harshly-worded statement, Jackson took Gilbert to task for his open letter to Cavaliers fans which slammed LeBron's decision to sign with the Miami Heat. Jackson says, "He speaks as an owner of LeBron and not the owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers. His feelings of betrayal personify a slave master mentality. He sees LeBron as a runaway slave."

He goes on, "LeBron is not a child, nor is he bound to play on Gilbert’s plantation and be demeaned. He has been a model citizen and has inspired the children of Akron, Cleveland, the State of Ohio and the United States."

Not sure if Cleveland fans would rush to LeBron's defense right now.

It's more like LeBron was ruler of the plantation. Didn't the owner and the rest of Cleveland do everything they could to keep him in Cleveland?

And Jesse Jackson sounds like a bitter old black guy that can't get beyond race when dealing with people!!! He does a lot more harm to racial equality than good. But, that's his point; he really doesn't want "equality".

Why didn't he speak up when the New Black Panthers were not prosecuted by the Justice Department?

I used to believe that Jesse was like MLK and wanted peace and equality for all. Over the last several years he has proven himself to be a bigot who turns everything involving a black person into race issue.

Just waiting for Al to show up and put in his two cents worth now.

I am from Cleveland. I am so glad that Le Bron went to Miami. I am very very happy for him. I can understand his reasons. For 7 years he was the main man on the floor. why? Cause they never brought anyone else to help him. And they complain, no ring. Nonsense. As far as the way he left. All of the speculation was the media's doing. He did not give any interviews until the date that he said he would have his decision. Up to that point the papps were constantly minute by minute giving false hope to teams, fans, everybody. That was not his fault nor his doing. He announced on neutral ground his intentions and that was it. I don't have stock in any of the sports, nor do I own a restaurant or sell sports memorabilia, so thats one reason I am not upset. Another, he made Cleveland, Cleveland did not make him. Cleveland was nothing till he came on board. He did not take the easy way out for a ring either. He worked hard with no help for 7 years, what is he supposed to do...keep wasting his life, and his families for a city? I would like him to know there are some of us that agree with him, and understand and are still his fans. I think its going to be very exciting to watch the Miami games.. Now I have two more guys to root for besides James. lol
