Brittany Murphy, Husband's Deaths -- the Mold Factor

7/25/2010 3:50 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

The investigation into Brittany Murphy and Simon Monjack's deaths is now being handled by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, TMZ has learned ... and it's all because of mold found in their home.

Law enforcement sources tell TMZ the issue of mold in the house came up early during the investigation into Brittany's death -- but it was deemed "not to be a contributing factor."

Then when Simon passed away a few months later, we're told the issue came up again -- but Brittany's mom, Sharon, wouldn't let the L.A. County Coroner's Office in to investigate the mold. Now, we're told, Sharon has agreed to let Public Health investigators into the home.

Mold could be relevant to Simon and Brittany's respiratory health. Pneumonia was a cause of death for both of them.

We're also told Simon's mother, Linda Monjack is fully supportive of this move, and will be flying from Europe so she can be close to the investigation.

UPDATE: A rep for Sharon tells TMZ, "I have never been personally asked by the Coroner or anyone from the Health Department to come and inspect my home for mold ... to the best of my knowledge there has been no evidence of mold at the Murphy residence."

That's terrible. I had a friend who moved into a beautiful apartment in San Diego a few years back, and both he and his roommate, after about a month, both thought they had colds that they couldn't get rid of. After it went on for a few more weeks, and they were both getting worse, the doctor suggested that they have someone inspect for mold, and after doing so, the inspector found tons of black mold in the walls. After they moved, they both got better.

What a terrible tragedy if true... Killer mold in your house. I had heard about in Texas from hysterical people on the news suing their contractors. But the is the first time I've heard of Death. Basically some vapor barrier techniques developed in the Midwest don't work right in warmer climates and there is structural mold that grows right on the wood.

Mold can grow easily with humidity above 55% which is very common in that area due to the marine layer that rolls in every night. This would be so sad if true sinc itwould have been preventable and could of happened to anyone oe including the many heartless a-holes on this site.

Yes mold is bad and that is why I had moved out of a house with mold in it but can't help but think that her mom had something to do with this as soon as it said her hubby died of the samething. Especially after what her mother said.

If it was my child that died the coroner could have torn that house to shreads to find the cause, what is up with moms. Black mold can make you very ill when I lived by the beach in L.A. my kids kept getting respiratory infections I took them to the doctor and after being diagnosed he put them on cypro, we had all of the walls knocked out downstairs and they were full of black mold, (the health dept. checked the house out before we hired the contractor and said we must do it)..Needless to say we moved 6 months later.

Mold can kill people with low immunity systems ie. crazy drug addicts... but the loony mother isn't innocent. Now she has all the money from both deaths. How convenient.

I totally believe this story and was thinking the same thing after both died of the same cause. I lived in a house that had Black Mold and it made me deathly sick, to the point where I almost died. Black Mold was growing in the AC ducting.

While there are over 2,000 types of molds, approximately 22 type are dangerous at medium to high level spore counts. stacci botrus & chaetomium are two of the most dangerous. IAQ testing should be able to be conducted on the home to determine the spore count levels. Yes blood anemia can defiantly be a result of prolonged exposure. As well as upper respiratory illness.

Give me a friggin break! Mold?? How about a sedetary lifestyle while pumping themselves full of painkillers and sedatives. There lungs probably barely even functioned when they slept because they were so jacked up on drugs. He was a fat ass and she was a toothpick. Case solved, for all of you wanna be cold case detectives handling the case! "mm something is fishy here".. Too funny!
