Village People Cop -- 'Idol' Considering Me as Judge!!

8/4/2010 10:23 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

The guy who played the original cop in the Village People claims he recently had a meeting with "American Idol" execs ... who told him that he's a "dark horse candidate" to be a judge on the show!

Victor Willis tells TMZ he'd be the "best choice" to replace Ellen DeGeneres and Simon Cowell because he was "the original idol judge for the selection of the Village People talent" back in 1977.

As we previously reported, Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez are slated to take the judges table once their contracts are worked out -- but just in case it doesn't work out with them, Willis claims, "I reminded the [American Idol] representative that I was a judge for the selection of talent for the most iconic group of characters of all time."

He added, "The show’s response was that they’re very much aware of this and that I’m considered a serious dark horse candidate."

So we gotta ask ...

When the people picking the judges tell you that you're a dark horse that means you won't be getting the job.

The idea of Victor Willis as an American Idol judge is a good one. He's certainly qualified. I hope he gets the gig!

He was married to Phylicia Rashad, from the Cosby Show, back in the 1980's.

Maybe he was simply confused after his recent interview for a custodial position at the show? They said "Janitor" he heard "judge"

TMZ, this has got to be a joke. Has he written any popular songs in recent years that we heard about? Has he created any popular musical groups or pop stars in recent years that we know about? If not, he is not going to be a judge...and I doubt if American Idol contacted him for a meeting.

What popular songs has Steven Tyler written or performed lately? Has Steven Tyler or Jennifer Lopez created any popular groups we know of in recent years or at all? Victor Willis would be as good of judge as any of the others named thus far.

ANYONE buy J-Lo or Jessica Simpson. Barry Gibb is THE BEST choice I personally think!

Could not agree more. I too think Victor Willis would be a great judge for American Idol. I heard he might be the relacement for Randy Jackson who I read this morning may be leaving the show.

neither of these two sluts is wrong with AI? they want this show to be serious, but seem to like the judges to be nontalented singers who havent had a hit since I dont know when.......Why not get some of those Super Stars that are still going strong with their careers and are legends. but instead they want to consider a latina fat azz like j-ho who cannot sing and this dude who only had hits in disco...what happened to great singers like Linda Ronstadt, Diana Ross, Barbara Striesand, Lionel Richie etc...these are talented singers that have been on that A list forever, but you choose D listed singers like j-ho and this Villiage Idiot!

If I recall correctly, doesn't this guy have a hard core drug problem and has been busted several times?

Yes, Steven Tyler does currently have a drug problem and Steven Tyler has been busted several times for drugs and so have Brit Michaels. So what's the big deal about Victor Willis former drug use and busts. The color of his skin maybe?

Watchoo Talkin Bout Willis

Of course he'd be a great addition. He wasn't just The Cop in the Village People, he WAS the Village People. He was the only real vocalist in the group for their first LP, the others were just studio vocalists. There was no group, and even on the later LPs, it's disputed as to whether the others really sang on there. Only Willis' lead vocals can be confirmed.

He also did vocal arrangements for other artists that Jacques Morali produced, not just The Village People.

He was married to Phylicia Allen (later Rashad) at one point and worked on her Josephine Superstar LP too, another Jacques Morali production.

The guy knows what he's doing. He only bowed out of the biz because of personal issues.

It's now officially a sideshow! WooHoo. Why not Victor? So he hasn't been in music for 32 years. Bah!

It should be:
Victor Willis
Debbie Gibson and
Barry Manilow

(seriously...if Steven Tyler takes this job Aerosmith has officially jumped any shark it had left)
