Olympic god Michael Phelps showed off his skills in the pool ... mackin' on his on-again/off-again GF Miss California USA Nicole Johnson at the Grand Wailea in Maui yesterday.

We're told Phelps took a bunch of photos and signed autographs for fans ... in between gettin' real close and personal with Miss Cali.

Fugly or not hes a smart dude. He knows where he needs to be to make "fugly" look like George Clooney- AROUND THE POOL. I wouldn't go anywhere unless I knew there was a pool if I was him. As a matter of fact Id hall a pool behind me in a little red wagon everywhere I went.
