Joe Montana Tears Holes in 'Rudy'

9/8/2010 11:38 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Joe Montana has some issues with the way his former college team was portrayed in "Rudy" -- because the former Notre Dame superstar just insinuated Rudy Ruettiger was more of a joke than an inspiration.

Montana -- who played on the 1975 Fighting Irish squad with Ruettiger -- appeared on DirecTV's Dan Patrick Show this morning and said of the flick, "It's a movie remember ... not all that's true."

After a dismissive sigh, Montana undermined some of the main storylines in the movie saying, "The crowd wasn’t chanting … nobody threw in their jerseys."

Montana acknowledged that the real Rudy did play in the final home game ... and did get a sack -- but stated that when the players carried Rudy off the field, they were "kinda playin' around ... I won't say as a joke, but playing around."

Joe finished, "He worked his butt off to get where he was ... but not any harder than anybody else."

Why are people saying Joe is jealous? Please. This guy has won Super Bowls, MVP's, and is widely considered the greatest QB ever. He has nothing to be jealous of.

And what Joe is saying is old news. I've plenty of stories pointing out how scenes in the movie were embellished, or even outright created. What Joe is saying is true. And it was Dan Patrick who brought the Rudy stuff up. Montana simply answered truthfully. Do you want him to lie? He wasn't slamming Rudy, just pointing out the facts. Simple as that.

I was unfortunate to meet that ass Montana. What a jerk. He was so uncool to all his ex fans. Did not want to autograph anything because he was not getting paid to do it

had the advantage of seeing 'Rudy' for the first time while not a child. the story was an overblown farce about a monomaniacal jock-sniffer living 5 grades below bench warmer. in other words, pretty much what montana just said, obvious to anyone not played like a cheap violin by hack films. almost couldn't believe people find the movie "inspirational", except perhaps as SNL sketch fodder.

Joe, you feel better now? You couldn't keep your mouth shut, you had to show your true colors. The only opinion changed was our opinion of you.

Shove it up your ass Joe...what you jealous because no movie was made about YOU. Rudy DID work his butt off to play on that team. He LOVED ND then and still does I am sure. Yes, it was a movie and some of it was pure movie conjecture. But from every interview I have read from your other teammates they tell the story very much the way the movie went. I USE to respect you now you can kiss MY fat white IRISH ass!

Egos. After all this time, his success in the limelight, Montana can't be gracious and kind to a former fellow college teammate? Why not just say, "Yes, Rudy is a good guy, the movie was great. That's kinda the spirit of Notre Dame and I'm grateful I had the opportunity to play there." But noooooo, his ego got in the way. Well, now we know about ol' Joe and the cut of his coat.

Joe Montana seems to have gone a little off the rails where Notre Dame is concerned. Within the last year or so, Joe basically said Notre Dame can no longer hack it as a big-time college football program with players who actually get an education and graduate. He indicated that ND should, therefore, basically give up on it and de-emphasize football. I don't know, maybe he wasn't entirely happy at ND, since Dan Devine kept him playing as a sub for quite a while. On the other hand, Joe's son, Nate, goes to ND, so Joe couldn't have too much of a grudge. Maybe his memory is just faulty.
