Joe Montana Tears Holes in 'Rudy'

9/8/2010 11:38 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Joe Montana has some issues with the way his former college team was portrayed in "Rudy" -- because the former Notre Dame superstar just insinuated Rudy Ruettiger was more of a joke than an inspiration.

Montana -- who played on the 1975 Fighting Irish squad with Ruettiger -- appeared on DirecTV's Dan Patrick Show this morning and said of the flick, "It's a movie remember ... not all that's true."

After a dismissive sigh, Montana undermined some of the main storylines in the movie saying, "The crowd wasn’t chanting … nobody threw in their jerseys."

Montana acknowledged that the real Rudy did play in the final home game ... and did get a sack -- but stated that when the players carried Rudy off the field, they were "kinda playin' around ... I won't say as a joke, but playing around."

Joe finished, "He worked his butt off to get where he was ... but not any harder than anybody else."

LOL, you fools. Of course the movie Rudy was beyond exaggerated and the guy interviewing asked Joe about the movie. Do you expect him to lie? The movie was cheesy, and of course if that happened in real life it would have been exactly how Joe described it. I remember this retarded guy in the that used to breakdance in the cafeteria in highschool....people used to chant his name also and cheer him on. As Joe described it....playing around....not a joke but playing around. Nothing wrong with what he said whatsoever. The people that post here are such whiners....LOL

Did you guys even listen to the interview? He gets asked if he played with Rudy so he says remember its a movie. The reason is because Dan Patrick was prob going to ask what it was like to play with Rudy and such and Joe is just telling him that a lot of the stuff in the movie is overdone for the story. Dan asks him what things weren't true and Joe tells him.

Its not like Joe is flat out bashing Rudy, he's just telling the true side of the story. He even says he did get the sack and he did work hard, but the movie makes it out like Rudy worked 10x harder than everyone else on the team and that he was carried off out of respect and because they loved him and Joe was just saying that he didnt work any harder than the other athletes that busted their ass to be on that team and he was carried off more as a goof than because of the respect and such. Even in the movie after the scene where Rudy is carried off they put the text up that no player has been carried off the field since to make it sound like Rudy was more important than he is.

What does Joe have to be jealous of? The guy has how many Super Bowl rings? The guy is considered the best or one of the best QBs to ever play in the NFL. The guy is a legend. Rudy has a movie. I think Rudy would rather trade places with Joe than Joe would with Rudy. Rudy said himself that he doesnt even get recognized a lot because people dont really know what the real Rudy looks like. Joe is recognized everywhere he goes.

You people acting Joe are idiots.

Rudy found himself at the White House watching his movie with President Clinton,Joe Montana and Colin Powell.
"That's pretty exciting. All I did was make a tackle. Think about, you know? I didn't win any superbowls, I didn't become the president, I didn't win and wars...I never quit."

Are you referring to the 1993 movie? I could see how it might come up on a sports show when interviewing Joe Montana, but how is a discussion of the accuracy of a 17 year old movie about events that happened 35 years ago newsworthy here?

Joe was asked a direct question and he answered it honestly. He's not bitter. What would he have to be bitter about? The fact that he has 4 Super Bowl rings and is considered by many to be the best QB in NFL history? He isn't the first guy to poke holes in the Rudy story.

Rudy was a good movie, but if anyone actually believes fact based Hollywood movies are truly authentic they need to get their head out of their A. The true talents of Rudy were the screenwriter and director for their ability to tug on heart-strings.

Joe was just a freshman on that team who was barely allowed to shine shoes for practice. Talk to Bob Golic, who actually played on that team and wrote a newspaper story about it where he backed up the film. I remember he joked that the part about Rudy being the last ND player ever carried off the field wasn’t true because he (Bob) had to be carried off a ton of times. And EVERYBODY knows the jersey scene never really happened that way. That’s never been a secret. Go enjoy retirement, Joe.

Funny stuff, well every team has its ****. Are you telling me that a guy with Rudys stature doesn't have to work harded than someone a good 50 pounds heavier and 8 inches taller? That was kind of a rediculous comment. I'm pretty sure there were more smiles than tears though when he got that sack though.

"I think it's good he spoke up... Too many Americans are in thrall to ridiculous 'miracle' stories, manufactured to keep them quiet and happy. Pat Tillman, balloon boy, Washington and the tree chopping, etc., etc.

Grow up.

here is an even more ridiculous one,,the english believing they won WW2...not even close, the american won it for them"

Your dreaming pal, read some history, the Russians defeated Hitler. Without Stalin America would be a fascist state run by a wealthy elite. oh wait it is!

Well thats a bit douchy. True or not, why bash a man by basically calling him a joke. It shows that Joe's moral character is slipping if he ever had any at all. That may sound harsh. But who is he to say anything. Especially so far after that fact.
