Joe Montana Tears Holes in 'Rudy'

9/8/2010 11:38 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Joe Montana has some issues with the way his former college team was portrayed in "Rudy" -- because the former Notre Dame superstar just insinuated Rudy Ruettiger was more of a joke than an inspiration.

Montana -- who played on the 1975 Fighting Irish squad with Ruettiger -- appeared on DirecTV's Dan Patrick Show this morning and said of the flick, "It's a movie remember ... not all that's true."

After a dismissive sigh, Montana undermined some of the main storylines in the movie saying, "The crowd wasn’t chanting … nobody threw in their jerseys."

Montana acknowledged that the real Rudy did play in the final home game ... and did get a sack -- but stated that when the players carried Rudy off the field, they were "kinda playin' around ... I won't say as a joke, but playing around."

Joe finished, "He worked his butt off to get where he was ... but not any harder than anybody else."

Rudy, a person with very limited talent, but made his dream come true. God Bless Rudy!!! Montana, incredible player, but very silly and insensitive to say anything against Rudy, and Rudy had to work way harder than you or anyone on that team because he had limited ability, but did everything with heart. Shame on you for trying to take that away from him. Go Rudy!! awesome heart!!

Now I'm glad LT's monster hit made Montana retire. He look like he was in a 10 car pile-up when he was on the sidelines. Classic stuff.

Joe's right I went to school with Rudy all the way through high school. The movie shows his family living in a small house, they actually had the largest and nicest house in the neighborhood. Rudy was one of the biggest a-holes around, he had that short guy bad a** attidude. Making that movie olny made him a bigger a- hole

I worked with a guy that also was on that ND team. He told me that Rudy was a joke and the movie was a fraud especially the way it portrayed him and his relationship with players. He also confirmed that there was no stadium chanting, no team walkout or jerseys turned in for him to suit. There's no secret as to how much the real Rudy was a pest and a huckster. Still a good movie but forget about it being a true story.

Joe, I have never posted on any web site, but I had to. STFU, you had so much glory. You had so much fame. You had so much...and still do...but you want to take the one little piece of glory that Rudy had...you're a sad sad bitter little man for that...you're just mad because with all your success, no one will ever make a movie about you. EVER.

I don't know why Joe would even care he has millions more than Rudy has ever seen. Talk about a thunder stealer!!. I am a chick an I don't even really get into sports but I have said since the first time that I saw this movie that it should be a requirement that every high school student see this movie. It is the prefect example of how working hard, having a dream and never letting anyone tell you no can pay off. GO, RUDY, RUDY, RUDY!!!

Big Irish fan here, yes it was a movie with some dramatic liscense taken to make it more feel good, but remember one thing, the 1 play that Rudy got in, is one more than Joe's kid will get in his whole career.

Jeez. If this country isn't in bad enough shape already, we have our childhood heroes slamming other inspirational heroes even if it was just a fantasy. We are getting dangerously close to not having "ANYTHING" to believe in. When that happens, we're through. It's bad enough that the only thing our kids love is their cell phones, now we have to start destroying role models. Correct me if i'm wrong Joe, but didn't the steroid era in sports bring up the issue of role models for our kids? You are one of the best role models I know of and now you want to send a mixed message of what a role model should be. Rudy wasn't a star but he was real. To be a good role model you have to be a star? F---you!
