Leo DiCaprio

Shells Out Cash for

Exotic New Pet

9/15/2010 9:00 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Leonardo DiCaprio just made a long-term commitment -- but sorry Bar, we're talking about a new pet tortoise he bought ... that's expected to live for another 70 years!

Sources close to the actor tell TMZ, Leo picked up the 10-year-old Sulcata tortoise at the North American Reptile Breeders Conference and Trade Show in Anaheim, CA over the weekend -- which he attended with fellow "Inception" star Lukas Haas -- and get this ... the animal can live to be 80 years old!

According to sources, Leo called a California pet store that specializes in rare reptiles and requested the tortoise one day before he picked it up. We're told the tortoise ran Leo a cool $400.

We're told Leo asked for the biggest tortoise they had -- a 38-pounder -- but according to experts, Sulcatas can grow to weigh 200 pounds.

Good thing he can afford 70 years worth of turtle food.

I bet someone will be serving turtle soup, this Xmass:) j/k

Nothing wrong with a tourtle as a pet, left inside a nice yard versus caged in a pet store! Just make sure don't flip it upside down:)

Cheers!

He could have adopted a huge 100+ lb. Sulcata for free. People have no concept of how big they get when they buy them as babies at the pet stores, and then have to give them to rescue organizations when they get too large. They are looking for homes all the time, so if anyone wants to be like Leo (and have the same pet as him) just do a search for tortoise rescue in your area and you can easily find a great pet.

In response to some of the idiotic comments I've read. Here are some facts:
1) Impulse shopper? Where do you get that idea?
2) About "where it was obtained".....Sulcatas are captive bred for the pet trade, not wild caught.
3) 99% of all the reptiles at that show were captive bred, not wild caught....Hence the name of the show: North American Reptile BREEDERS Conference and trade show. Do your homework before going off all half ****ed spewing pure lies.
4) More dogs and cats are thrown away (set free) than any reptile, ever....Go write your idiotic views about free roaming pets on a cat/dog website.

OMG stop attacking Leo!
He bought a pet-so what-loads of people do...
Id love and love a tortoise-I think its awesome its a bit different from the usual dog choice.
Im sure he will ensure its looked after by himself or staff.
Why is it people see fit to attack celebs they know nothing about and simply do it most likely cos they are jelous and not happy in their own lives!
