MJ Cemetery Charging 3 Bucks to Leave Gifts

9/15/2010 8:00 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

It's gonna cost Michael Jackson fans if they want to continue leaving gifts inside the King of Pop's mausoleum -- because TMZ has learned the cemetery is now charging a special $3 MJ delivery fee.

Michael Jackson mausoleum gift fee.

According to sources at the infamous burial space, Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale, CA has decided to take down the stage where fans were previously allowed to place gifts -- and are now enacting a new gifting policy ... so long as fans pay the price and abide by the rules.

Effective immediately, cemetery staff will take gifts for MJ inside the mausoleum -- where fans are still forbidden from setting foot -- for a $3 fee ... oh yeah, as long as those gifts are flowers.

Anything else -- teddy bears, posters, picture frames, candles -- will get dumped ... and if they run out of space inside, we're told excess gifts will have to brave the elements outside.

UPDATE: The cemetery tells us "Anyone who purchases flowers, for any decedent, can request that the arrangement purchased at Forest Lawn is to be placed at an interment site."

Comment:Mymjj5,what do you think about this charging fee?
In order to make the fans stop, it's too low.

I don't blame FL one bit for cracking down. Unfortunately, there are too many people who refuse to operate within reasonable boundaries or follow the rules. This is a cemetery, not a place to "hang out" or clutter with teddy bears or deface by writing "Miss You MJ" and other things on the sides of the building. Some people have no class at all. I can understand fans wanting to visit in the first year, but enough is enough. The Jackson family should consider building some type of memorial somewhere else where fans can hang out all they want or maybe even write messages. A cemetery is not the place for that. There are others buried there too, and other families, both famous and non-famous, who deserve some privacy.

We see what became of Jim Morrison's grave. It was abused and defaced and made a mockery of by over zealous fans with no sense of decency or decorum. Elvis' body had to be moved from a Memphis cemetery when "fans" tried to rob the grave. This is the reason that Freddie Mercury told his family and friends to cremate him. He said, "I don't want anybody to dig me up. I just want to rest in peace." Michael's death was a shock and a tragedy and fans have a right to be sad and miss him and want to visit. But boundaries have to be drawn at some point. Otherwise, things just spiral out of control.

Great Post Cathy! Perhaps after the murder issue is resolved the family will dedicate their attention fulltime to building the museum/theater in Gary. That would be the best and ideal place for the fans to visit and just "hang out"!

I heard a long time ago that Katherine Jackson had requested the cards and gifts be sent to her once Forest Lawn removed them from Holly Terrace.

I have to agree with mymjj5, great post, Cathy!
Although I still don't like the thought of Michael lying between these cold stones we have to respect the family's decision and the dignity of that place. Do you remember when we talked about Harvey's suggestion to create a public resting place in Las Vegas some time ago? I got a little bit startled about myself, lol, but somehow I didn't find this possibility too inappropriate for Michael. Even more, I was – and am – not sure at all whether he maybe would like to "rest" (hm) like that. However, my problem with each public gravesite is that it wouldn't just be the decent, caring, loving FANS who'd come to visit Michael because it means something to them. No, it would be the tourists, too, with no special relationship to Michael, a bag of popcorn in the hand and chewing gum in the mouth, chatting, laughing, giggling.
And this does really give me the creeps.

A lot of kids dying with cancer in hospitals around the world would need those gifts and flowers in their hospital rooms. Why don't we all Michael Jackson fans donate the gifts and flowers intented for Michael Jackson to those sick kids?
