Oprah -- I'll Pay the Taxes for My Aussie Giveaway

9/17/2010 9:00 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Oprah Winfrey doesn't want her all-expenses-paid Australian trip giveaway to turn into the tax trap that soured her "Everybody gets a car!" show ... in fact, O is making sure none of her new "guests" pay an extra cent to the IRS.

TMZ spoke with Larry Edema from Michigan -- who was selected to be in the audience on Monday for Oprah's big giveaway -- and dude tells us Winfrey had a certified public accountant on hand to address the tax issue right after the taping.

Edema says the CPA informed the group that all taxes associated with the trip would be "handled by the Oprah show," so the trip would truly be 100% free.

The CPA also explained that O would cover all sightseeing costs and travel-related expenses -- including passport costs for people who can't afford them.

091510_oprahIt's a big change from Oprah's 2004 controversy -- when she famously gave away brand new cars, but saddled audience members with as much as $7,000 in gift taxes.

Okay, If you can't afford or don't want to pay the taxes...couldn't you just say "no thanks" and walk away??

I could. I'm happy just driving down to the beach...well I was happier before BP came along.

BP is going to make it right...

In fact according to BP they are spending 5 million a month telling us how right they are going to make it

If you receive money from Oprah to pay your taxes, isn't that also taxable income?

Yeah I know. Between BP and the Government ...well I probably shouldn't say that.

I have actually been considering moving down to that area. I plan to go down soon to see how bad things eally are as faras jobs and all. I suppose that is all that is stopping me.

I wonder why Oprah didn't do something like bring her audience to La, Fl or Al?? Why Australia?? If I were in her shoes I would try to help my home country before I spent millions in another, ya know!

Oh well, everything you do good or bad comes back to ya.

She did it

No she isn't making them pay extra, she is making us AUSSIES pay for her to come over. My state alone is forking out $500,000 for her to just come to this one area. What a joke

Hopefully, those audiences members know that if Oprah pays their taxes for the trip that payment is considered "taxable income" and they will owe taxes on that payment.

I live in Australia, Oprah's visit has been news here this week, i would like one thing to be clear, Oprah is NOT, thats right NOT paying for anything out of her pocket, the Australian government is paying ALL EXPENSES, over 3 MILLION dollars for the trip.

Im amazed that people actually think Oprah pays for anything, the cars she gave away were payed for by the car company, didn't cost Oprah a cent, all the stuff SHE gives away is comped by the company that i supplying it, Oprah's a greedy Bit$h.

OK Oprah is taking care of the tax situation. But I hope Qantas has the common sense to have their chief pilot, the A380 chief pilot and a senior IP pilot aboard when that pansy John Travolta tries to play hero pilot in the ****pit. Just let him sit in the right seat for about two hours over the middle of the Pacific Ocean, fat dumb and happy.

Then he can walk through the passenger cabin looking like Otto the autopilot from the movie Airplane.

I'm two years removed from my tax law class, but unless I'm mistaken, her paying the taxes would still be included in their gross income. So basically she hands them the trip, pays the taxes and then the IRS hits them up at the end of the fiscal year for their salaries and the trip, AND the taxes Oprah paid.

I'm sure someone under her found a loopwhole, but the trip and the taxes paid all sound like additional gross income to me

What a bunch of sour people most of you are. When you weigh everything up, Oprah did nothing to deserve such scorn. Maybe it's because you've done nothing in your pitiful lives that is worthy of note or of interest to anyone else. Oprah's self-made, loved and living the life! Suck on that losers!

It will be very sad when you are not on anymore. You have been a great inspriation for all of us, and will be missed dearly. Enjoy your life and do the things you haven't been able to do. Life is to short not to enjoy it. Please enjoy
