Polygamous Family: TV Show is Worth the Risk

9/28/2010 12:52 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

The polygamous family featured on the TLC reality show "Sister Wives" is speaking out after learning they've become the target of a felony bigamy investigation in Utah ... claiming the show is a "risk worth taking."

TMZ just received a statement from the Brown family -- saying, "We are disappointed in the announcement of an investigation, but when we decided to do this show, we knew there would be risks."

The family continues, "But for the sake of our family, and most importantly, our kids, we felt it was a risk worth taking."

Yesterday, the Lehi Police Department in Utah announced that the family is being investigated for felony bigamy ... and plans to turn over all evidence to the Utah County Attorney's Office for review and possible prosecution.

The show features a 42-year-old man named Kody Brown -- who has 3 wives, a prospective 4th wife and 13 children.

I wonder if any of these "wives" receive(d) public assistance for the family? Tax payers shouldnt have to pay for their illegal lifestyle

Talking about discriminating! Homosexuals are crying about they can't be out and open about what they do in the bedroom, and these people can't marry whoever or how many ever people they want. It's stupid, if we want a truly "discriminating free" society, stop with this as well!

Can we all say ENOUGH in unison? Have we not been BALLOON BOYed out? Can we stop caring about a nurse turned disgraceful Kate?
Can say enough bubble-butt Kardashians?

Can we say enough millions for Ryan Seagrest and his slimy dealings?

Even the Roloff Dwarfs have taken THEIR 15 minutes of fame and exhausted any redeeming value by stretching it to a meaningless self absorbed family...exit stage left!

Um...let's see here. Ok, so I've decided I want to marry my brother and if that doesn't work out, I'll marry my dog & have children with human heads that walk around on all fours. If gays can marry, losers can hide behind religion and get away with it, why can't I marry my brother or my dog! It's my constitutional right isn't it? Whoever brought up Pandora's Box, kudo's, cause that is exaclty what is going to happen!

Why should you, the government or anybody care how many people live together and call it marriage? If it's legal to do without a marriage certificate...what changes with one? A man or a woman can have as many sexual partners as they can manage (of either sex) outside of marriage and it's perfectly legal, but if they want a formal acknowledgement of committment, suddenly that's not right? And for all the Bible thumpers out many wives did Moses have?

We're so "civilized" because we puportedly recognize marriage as one man, one women? I don't need to be polygamous, personally (more than one wife? are you crazy?), but why not be mad at people who have more kids than they can afford, who are not self-sufficient on welfare, not paying child support, who continue to have kids out of wedlock, without a job--those who let their children join gangs and run the streets at night, because they're too irresponsible to commit to a partnership to raise children, and too dumb to stay in school to get skills for a good job to financially support their offspring.

Get your priorties in line, America. Clean up the big junk in your backyard before you go after the meaningless little things. The top focus in America should be financial self-sufficiency, education, job training and personal accountability for one's actions. If some guy wants to live with ten women or visa-versa or any combination therein--and they pay their own bills and raise the children with dignity, manners, respect for education and hard work--where's the flaw, Bubba? Again--so long as they don't file paperwork, it's perfectly legal to be non-monogamous or non-traditional in relationships. Which is worse--a man with children by 6 different women, scattered and uncared for across 6 different households--or the guy who tries to keep it all in one house and take care of his responsibilities with do***entation, paperwork and communal care for the children?

But, that's America--we ignore the elephant in the living room and go after the flies. Nobody wants to take on the real, big problems which actually are destroying our society--instead it's easier to pick on the fringe. MEH.

So will they now go after all men and women now who have afairs? It's no different since they are not legally married. He is just sleeping around with his first wives blessing. And why should'nt they be allowed there lifestyle if we are suppose to change the laws for gay marriage?? Where are these people's rights??

Why on earth would ANY man want more than one wife? I don't envy my husband...

Hell, I can barely afford one wife, much less four.

Seriously, though. If he had divorced the first wife to marry #2, then divorced #2 to marry #3, then another divorce to marry #4, there would not be anything wrong in the eyes of the State of Utah. It's called "serial monogamy." The only difference is, the four women are living under on roof.

Don Martin

Wanna make something a felony? make it a felony to have a kid out of wedlock and expect citizens to build schools and pay taxes, provide food and medical care to support them.

Make it a felony for trusted male members of families to commit sexual abuse on their families - Instead of something merely requiring counseling over 90 percent of the time..

Shacking up is perfectly acceptable, gays paying people to surrogate for them is artsy fartsy, but if a guy happens to choose a lifestyle that requires him to man up and accept responsibility for his family he is then a felon?

...welcome to America.

Um, before too many of you, and by extension the authorities in Utah, get too excited, this guy ISN'T a polygamist, technically. He is only legally married to one woman. In effect, the other three are little more, legally speaking, than mistresses. This investigation is going to end up being a huge waste of taxpayer money, because technically the guy isn't breaking the law. I'm sure TLC knew that going in.

Utah has common law marriage.

30-1-4.5. Validity of marriage not solemnized.
(1) A marriage which is not solemnized according to this chapter shall be legal and valid if a court or administrative order establishes that it arises out of a contract between a man and a woman who:
(a) are of legal age and capable of giving consent;
(b) are legally capable of entering a solemnized marriage under the provisions of this chapter;
(c) have cohabited;
(d) mutually assume marital rights, duties, and obligations; and
(e) who hold themselves out as and have acquired a uniform and general reputation as husband and wife.
(2) The determination or establishment of a marriage under this section must occur during the relationship described in Subsection (1), or within one year following the termination of that relationship. Evidence of a marriage recognizable under this section may be manifested in any form, and may be proved under the same general rules of evidence as facts in other cases.

Sounds like bigamy to me.
