Greg Giraldo's Would-Be Gig Becomes Memorial

9/30/2010 6:00 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

TMZ has learned ... the comedy club where Greg Giraldo was scheduled to perform this weekend is now putting together plans for a memorial instead, featuring a tribute to the late comedian's life.

The manager at Governor's Comedy Club in Levittown, NY tells TMZ, the memorial is scheduled for Friday at 10:30 PM ... exactly when Greg was supposed to take the stage.

We're told the club will be playing Greg's DVDs on the televisions -- there won't be any admission fee ... and all donations will go to Greg's family.

The manager tells us, "We just want to commemorate his life." As we previously reported, Greg passed away yesterday ... five days after he was hospitalized for an overdose.

RIP Greg Giraldo.

Very funny man. So sorry for his family. He was the ONLY reason I would tune into the roasts! Seemed like a nice guy also. What I can't believe is how out of touch all the "entertainment" shows are! Yesterday before leaving work I read on TMZ he had passed away. Got home to find out more and not ONE of these generic shows (entertainment tonight, access hollywood etc.) had ANYTHING about this. ALL ABOUT Bristol Palin!!! Come on!!!!
Are you kidding me? He may not have been a household name but MANY, MANY people know him from the roasts and the comedy competion show! He had a HUGE following. They really have no clue who their audience is. Again, very sad about his death. No matter HOW it happened.

No 'prescription drugs' is standard for 'prescription drugs' in case you've been living under a rock the last few years people in the news are ODing on Vicodin, Percs, Ambien and the such way more than 'coke'.

"why are the giving a memorial to a man who overdosed! it is pathetic. don't give it any more publicity." - kez

you're a idiot. he was a popular comedian with a lot of respect. people need to know the dangers of prescription drugs. "censoring" his death and how he died doesn't accomplish a damn thing.

All the people with the sad little accomplishment-free lives are writing in to tell the rest of us that they have no sympathy. Of course they don't. They're not human and this gives them an opportunity to tell the rest of us about it. Talk about people who will not be missed. (PS. Don't care how/why the person died. If your parents had been more successful in their efforts you would know this is no way to speak at anyone's passing.) Guess this is the society we live in.

I can be pretty cold hearted at times, but it really disappoints me to see so many people here posting cruel and insensitive things about Greg. Whether his overdose was accidental or intended, you have no idea what was going on inside his highly intelligent brain. Depression can be a really hard thing to deal with and while you are happy now, you never know where your mind will be 5, 10 or 20 years from now. Try to show some empathy.
RIP Greg, thanks for all the laughs.

People can be so cold. Is your life so perfect that you can judge someone else's? This wasn't a suicide like some have thought, it is simply a tragedy that any life be cut short.

If you people would listen to the news carefully, you would know that his death was reported as AN ACCIDENTAL OVERDOSE of PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION. It was not a suicide. Yes, the man had problems and he was trying to work on them. None of us are perfect and it's a very sad story because if he was truly trying to change his ways, he was denied that chance. As it says in the bible: JUDGE NOT, LEST YE BE JUDGED. Let the man rest in peace.

Greg Giraldo was a great comedian and human being. Regardless of how he died, suicide or accident, it is a TRAGEDY! People making the "no sympathy" claims are cold, soulless ****s who probably weren't loved enough a children so they take it out on the dead. PATHETIC!!!!
