Randy Moss -- Support from 'The Herd'

11/3/2010 5:00 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Not everyone connected to Randy Moss is kicking the guy when he's down ... the NFL star's college coach not only has Randy's back ... but insists Moss has always been a "team guy."

TMZ spoke with former Marshall University head coach Bob Pruett -- who led Randy and The Herd to a conference championship back in 1997 ... and dude tells us the Randy he knows was "always a role model."

In case you've been in a cave this week -- Moss was the victim of a surprise cut by the Minnesota Vikings ... and since his release, Moss has been getting killed in the press for allegedly creating drama in the locker rooms of both the Vikes and the New England Patriots.

But Coach Pruett -- who says he still talks frequently with Randy -- tells us. "[Moss] definitely wears his emotions on his sleeve" ... but insists "He's just a competitive athlete who wants to win ... he's always been a team guy."

Pruett did have one interesting criticism about the Vikings -- saying, "It seems like the people at Minnesota are having problems with players other than [Randy]."

Wonder if he's talking about a guy who's name rhymes with Schmett Schmavre?

This idiot is NOT a team guy, he's a whinebag moron who just causes **** wherever he goes. The idiot was insulting the hell outta some local business that tried to hold a free lunch in the clubhouse a few days before he was cut, he caused a major scene instead of having some class...he constantly whined because Brady was not passing to him enough, he insults coaches...he's a jerk that can't keep his mouth shut and just play. When he doesn't just QUIT in the middle of a play, he's good...but who wants to win with a jerk like this on their team? Take your money and disappear, you boring crybaby. Team unity is worth a whole lot more than one player who doesn't know when to stop acting like some ignorant played out 90's rapper...get a calendar dude, and grow up already...

"In case you've been in a cave this week -- Moss was the victim of a surprise cut by the Minnesota Vikings ..." -- TMZ

Well, sports journalists TMZ staff are not. A)Even using Moss and "victim" in the same sentence is so objectively out of touch with the sports world it is beyond description. B)Surprise cut??!!?? Funny stuff for two reasons. After what he said to the media and HOW he behaved, the most likely team response was to waive him. Moss is known to be intelligent underneath the bravado stuff and he could only have expected that he was terminating his job in Minnesota with his words and behavior that seemed like he was doing his best to act mentally unstable. Because the CHARITABLE interpretation is that he was trying to get fired. Otherwise, the dude is really losing it.

The Vikings' decision to waive Randy Moss may have been spurred in part by Moss' alleged tirade over a post-practice meal, a story first reported by Yahoo! Sports on Tuesday. The story was later corroborated by Gus Tinucci, co-owner of Tinucci's Restaurant and Catering, which set up the buffet spread that Moss allegedly criticized in an expletive-laced blowup Friday afternoon. Tinucci told the St. Paul Pioneer Press that Moss was so unhappy with the buffet that he even refused to eat any of it after his rant. "We had the whole buffet set up, and we had a nice spread -- chicken, ribs, round of beef with a carving station, the whole deal," Tinucci told the Pioneer Press. "(Moss) comes in, and I'm helping one of the guys and didn't look up, and all of a sudden I heard, 'What the (expletive) is this? I wouldn't feed this (expletive expletive) to my (expletive) dog!' And he's screaming it at the top of his lungs." Tinucci told the Pioneer Press that only one Viking intervened, telling Moss to "shut the (expletive) up," but that Brett Favre also seemed to disapprove of Moss' actions. Tinucci said a Vikings locker-room attendant later apologized to him. "He said, 'Don't worry about it, Gus, he's an (expletive). He's done this every time we've had food,'" Tinucci told the newspaper. An anonymous player who witnessed the scene told Yahoo! Sports! there was a very uncomfortable feeling afterward and that Moss "deserved to be cut after that." "You know that feeling where you just can tell someone feels so small? That's what it was like being there," the player told the website. According to the player's account, the food "was actually really good," but Moss was so unhappy that he wound up at his locker saying, "You know, I used to have to eat that crap -- but now I've got money." Tinucci's Restaurant, which has been in business since 1958, is reportedly a favorite of former Vikings center Matt Birk, now with the Baltimore Ravens. When asked what he thought of Moss' outburst, the six-time Pro Bowler told the Pioneer Press: "Some people don't have any taste. Some people don't have any manners. And some people don't have either."

Moss is a piece of sh*t! Somebody should have punched this a-hole in the face for treating people like that!

Randy Moss, the Dennis Rodman of the NFL. Team Player.....right

1386 days ago

Hey TMZ... In case you've been in a cave for the last week, Moss was NOT "the victim of a surprise cut by the Minnesota". Any sports fan could have seen this coming after Moss' press conference and his rant after that team practice in which he had a hissy-fit at a team dinner. Moss is as far away fom a team player as you can get in the NFL. This is some horrible reprting and you's should seriously consider pulling this story. What a joke!

Why didn't Randy's coach from "Rand University" comment?

1386 days ago

I don't think he's a bad guy- just not really good at expressing himself in a construtive way. Its seems these misdirected outburst come out of frustration with his team or coach. I think once he got to MN he realized what a cluster**** it was between their spinless disorganized, unrespected coach and their prima donna, old QB and who can blame him. He came from the best, well oiled machine of a franchise and the best coach in the NFL. Who would't be frustrated and angry. He def took NE for granted. I think he is more pissed at himself than anything else.

I don't think he is a bad guy. Just frustrated and unable to deal and direct that in a more percise and mature manner.

Why the hell is Pruett standing up for this loser. He doesn't even claim that he went to Marshall. I agree with another comment. Why don't teachers and coaches from Rand U. make a statement? Hmmm, because it's a college made up by a moron for a moron. Moss either grow up, quit whining and play or go away! Act like an adult!

Here in Minnesota we have no problems with our player (except maybe an old man that should just give up) but we have HUGE PROBLEMS with our head coach!! ALL THAT TALENT AND WE STILL LOSE EVERY SUNDAY?!?!?!?

1386 days ago

Hope he enjoys being unemployed. He only plays when he feels like it, which isn't often. Revis was dead on when he called him a "slouch". Maybe Cincinnati will pick him up and he can join T.O. and "Ocho-Stinko" and become the 2010 version of the "Three Stooges". Overrated, overpaid, and overHEARD. Please.......Moss...........go away. Oh, and shut the f__k up!!!
