Report:

Methadone Found in

Andy Irons' Hotel Room

11/3/2010 11:56 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Surf legend Andy Irons reportedly had "numerous" medications in his Dallas, TX hotel room in the wake of his death -- including methadone.

According to Hawaii's Star Advertiser newspaper -- the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office claims the methadone was found inside a container of a prescription drug called zolpidem (sleep aid)  ... which was on Andy's nightstand inside the hotel room.

An investigator with the Tarrant County M.E. tells TMZ they did not release any information about methadone to the Star Advertiser -- but we spoke to the reporter, who tells us someone at the M.E.'s office volunteered the info to him when he called. The reporter did not specify who he spoke to at the M.E.'s office.

As we previously reported, the 32-year-old surfing champ -- considered by many to be one of the best in the world -- was found dead yesterday at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Dallas.

Irons' family released a statement suggesting he may have been suffering from dengue fever ... though methadone is not typically used to treat that illness.

Methadone is also used for chronic pain control. It's not just for heroin addicts anymore.

Dengue fever causes extreme pain, thats why is also known as 'Bonecrusher Fever' and 'Bonebreaker Fever' and there is no cure for it..who could blame him if he used painkillers to deal with this condition..

The poor guy and his family! People can't even let him die in peace without publicizing something negative! His family and friends are already brokenhearted! They don't need this!

Dengue is very serious and if he was truly in a hospital for it, they shouldn't have let him out; that is so hard for me to imagine. I live part time in a dengue-prone area and when you have it, you are completely bedridden from the pain, and methadone is not used for pain management for this. I am saddened to hear that this widely misused drug was found. My deepest sympathy to his family.

Zolpidem is generic Ambien. A half zoplidem knocks me out, so if he mixed that with methadone it could have been an accidential overdose. The levels in his blood indicate if it was accidental or suicide.

tmz did the same thing with heath, billy mays, and brittany murphy. why do you have to give out pieces of info that mislead the public? you're in such a hurry to give "breaking" news that the truth gets lost in all your crap. i know what you're trying to infer even if you didn't come right out and say it. and that is cruel to his family and his many fans. just because you're reporting the facts doesn't make it right. i hope the methadone is not related to his cod, but if it is, then it is. But i agree with Janet, stop looking for the negative and celebrate the life of a fellow human being.

Methadone killed my husband's nephew. He was a heroin addict who got methadone on the street. For the same high, a person has to take too much methadone which slows breathing & heartbeat, ending in death.

He just won the Tahiti Pro not a few months ago and now he's gone. Man...
For TMZ to report this as if he was some junkie is really low class. He was a world class athlete respected all around the world. He heart goes out to his wife and family. I hope the ASP has a proper tribute for him.

OooooNooo!

#1 is correct -- its fairly common now to use it as a long-acting pain management drug, not just for heroin addicts any more. The Ambien is also common. I wonder if he was found face down like Heath Ledger? Many times when they do a narcotic and a depressant and fall asleep on their stomach their own body weight prevents them from breathing and that stress on the heart kills them. "Positional asphyxia" is the medical term.

To say that Methadone is not used to control the pain of dengue fever is pure assumption. It IS indeed used as a pain control in instances of pain unrelieved by non-narcotic pain relievers, and any doctor who is comfortable and knowledgeable about the uses of Methadone might in fact prescribe this drug. In the meantime, I find the statements made by an undisclosed "source" to an unidentified "reporter" to be highly suspect.
