Report:

Methadone Found in

Andy Irons' Hotel Room

11/3/2010 11:56 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Surf legend Andy Irons reportedly had "numerous" medications in his Dallas, TX hotel room in the wake of his death -- including methadone.

According to Hawaii's Star Advertiser newspaper -- the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office claims the methadone was found inside a container of a prescription drug called zolpidem (sleep aid)  ... which was on Andy's nightstand inside the hotel room.

An investigator with the Tarrant County M.E. tells TMZ they did not release any information about methadone to the Star Advertiser -- but we spoke to the reporter, who tells us someone at the M.E.'s office volunteered the info to him when he called. The reporter did not specify who he spoke to at the M.E.'s office.

As we previously reported, the 32-year-old surfing champ -- considered by many to be one of the best in the world -- was found dead yesterday at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Dallas.

Irons' family released a statement suggesting he may have been suffering from dengue fever ... though methadone is not typically used to treat that illness.

Come on people. Think about it.

If he had dengue fevers, wouldn't the doctor that prescribed the medication have treated the dengue fever instead of just giving him pain medication?

Grow up folks - this loser was just another lame-ass drug addict, strung out, blowing money on drugs, wasting his life away, scooping up cash because he likes to play in the water all the while real people, clean, honest, and the like are trying to make ends meet just to actually survive.

What a pathetic LOSER

NOT ONE DOCTOR in the US would prescribe methadone for such a so-called viral infection. Fact is, methadone is one of the most, if not the most, strictly controlled drugs - he wasn't given this for a virus.

The world is better off without another wannabe

A competitive surfer not being sick suffers frequently suffers from muscular pains even more in competition, That's probably why he had medications on him, and unfortunately he must have administered the wrong medication for his illness. Andy, was a family focused surfer, a truly special soul, and everyone in the surfing community will remember him as such. To the TMZ people, please have some respect for people passing. As many say, these news are misleading, and offensive to his family and friends.

Uhmmmm. One major problem is the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office is in Fort Worth. The hotel where he was found is Dallas, in Dallas County, which is under the jurisdiction of Dallas County and the DCME's office.

I just happened to catch endless summer not for the surfers but the size of the waves. Surfers are nuts. You have to respect the skill and talent. If you don't drown, your body is going to get beaten to a pulp. You don't always ride the wave in.

Seriously? Shame on you guys for reporting that. Like a M.E. can just walk in a room and pick up a generic pill and be like, "Yep, that's methadone." C'mon! I appreciate all the great photos and positive things you've run on AI, but let the champ rest. The surfing world has lost a true waterman, legend and great human being. All our thoughts and prayers go out to the Irons family.

You guys are a bunch of idiots for posting such allegations. Notice how the idiot that volunteers such information, doesn't release his name. He most likely got paid just to say something like that. Andy Irons was a personal friend of mine. Shame on you guys to make up such stories to get publicity for your show. Or even allow someone to say such things. Why don't you guys get the facts straight. He did suffer from Dengue fever, he got it a few years ago!! It doesn't leave your system, when you get sick it returns. Let the guy rest in peace will ya!! He was a great husband, son, brother, friend and would have been a great father. Leave his family alone and let them grieve. Don't you have anything else better to do with your time? Really shame on you!!!

TMZ --- DALLAS IS NOT IN TARRANT COUNTY SO IF YOU ARE TALKING TO THE M.E. THERE THEN HE DID NOT DIE IN DALLAS. DALLAS IS IN DALLAS COUNTY NOT TARRANT COUNTY.
FORT WORTH IS IN TARRANT COUNTY. DFW AIRPORT IS IN TARRANT COUNTY.

Methadone is a "schedule 1" controlled substance. What that means is that it is under the highest control posible for a prescription drug. Possession of it without a prescription is a felony. The primary purpose of methadone and its sole purpose is to ween heroin addicts of the drug, and assist heroin addicts with "kicking" the drug (a nasty experience. I am a cop and drug recocgnition expert. That fever may have been horrible, but there are several drugs to treat pain, i.e. vicadine, codine, etc. Methadone is very addicting and the chance he was prescribed this drug for pain relief is "highly" unlikely.
