Miley Cyrus -- Under Fire for Beer Consumption

11/6/2010 10:30 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Miley Cyrus put herself and others at risk this week by indulging in that ice cold Corona at a nightclub in Spain ... this according to an international alcohol awareness organization.

Even though officials in Spain told us 17-year-old Miley didn't break any laws ... the head of the International Institute for Alcohol Awareness, James E. Copple, is concerned other young people will follow her lead and engage in "risky behavior associated with underage alcohol consumption."

Copple tells us, "The young people that see her as a role model could mimic the same behavior and as a consequence will go out and become intoxicated, putting their safety at risk."

Copple noted ... according to his organization, "85% of young people who drink, drink to get intoxicated."

So we gotta ask ...

In Spain it is legal to drink beer at 16 and spirits at 18. Nobody would bat an eyelid at a 17 year old girl having a beer in Spain if she wasn't an American "pop star". As usual it's uptight Americans making a problem out of they'll want her in rehab. As if the world doesn't have bigger problems.

She was in Europe, where there is NO law for drinking at a certain age. Anyway, did you wait til you were 21 to drink a beer?

I believe we really need to change our attitude about drinking in this country. We need to teach young people to drink responsibly not have this puritanical attitude. Young people can vote at 18, get married and join the military. However, they can't be shown how to drink responsibly. It is a ridiculous attitude. We have been to Europe with our sons when they were at this age and they absolutely had a drink when we were at dinner etc. As an aside, to put the responsibility for her parents' marriage breaking up on this young woman is absurd. They are adults who are responsible for their own actions.

Here's the catch though, there was no "underage alcohol consumption". Newsflash: most European countries's legal drinking age is 18, NOT 21, and other countries are even lower. The USA might think it's almighty, but US laws don't apply overseas.

Drinking at 17 if the legal drinking age is 17 in the country you are drinking in, is not "underage drinking". Idiots.

Regardless of what the law is or what people think, it shows what kind of person she's becoming and what kind of people her parents are.

Get off your high horses and stop being hypocrites.I don't know what kind of fairy tale land a lot of your grew up in but you need to face it, teenagers are not meant to be role models for your children. Teens are out to get high and f#ck, period. Be a role model yourselves then maybe some of you can stop depending on Hollywood to do it for you.

From Spain.
Wait a moment. At 17, in a disco, in Spain, and drinking Corona? This girl is broke, is a freak or her doctor is close to her.

Of course, she broke the law. Is a recent law (the old was over 16) but in my country EVERYBODY broke this law, even in public. But, as we say " Spain is different".

She needs to grow up and have a good time. The rest is only her responsability.

She is not a role model. Young people should not look to entertainers to be a role model. They are into entertainment because it's a business they want to be in. There is no mandate for entertainers to be ethical or even good role models. They are in it to be famous and make a lot of money. That's it. Most of them also take the free market capital system, that enables them to make so much money and be so famous, for granted.

Calm. The hell. Down. Just because we are prudes in America about alcohol and sex doesn't mean the rest of the world has to live up to our stupid, unrealistic standards.

#153: Perfect statement. Cin Cin!!!
It is ridiculous how America arrogantly nitpicks which USA laws they think every country should follow. Yet it turns its head ignoring the underage working kids in China working in sweatshops to provide products for America when it is against the law in America.

I am so sure that teens everywhere, who have never tasted a drop of alcohol, are going to rush out and become alcoholics because M.C. drank a Corona in Spain. All of these indignant parents and others are just looking for something to blame their kids bad behavior on. As a parent of 4, now grown, boys I never thought of anyone but family members as role models for them. You have more direct control over them if you teach them solid values and responsibility, know the kids they run with and their families, mentor them, keep trust, expect they will make mistakes, but be sure they have learned because of it. To expect a celebrity to be a role model is a cop out.Give your kids a solid foundation and it will carry them through life.
