Miley's Herb Salvia

Classified as

'Drug of Concern'

12/10/2010 10:45 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Miley Cyrus' drug of choice -- salvia -- has been listed as a "drug of concern" by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency.

Salvia Effects: What is Salvia
According to the DEA -- salvia is a Mexican herb that can be smoked to "evoke hallucinogenic effects."

In fact, the DEA states, "Psychic effects include perceptions of bright lights, vivid colors and shapes, as well as body movements and body or object distortions."

But that's not all -- the DEA adds ... other effects include uncontrolled laughter and overlapping realities. Negative physical effects may include incoordination, dizziness, and slurred speech.

According to Scientific American Magazine, the DEA is currently "looking into the drug" to determine if it should be considered "on par" with LSD and heroin.

However, research conducted by several universities -- including Harvard -- show salvia may have some serious medicinal value ... and could help improve treatments for conditions like schizophrenia and addiction.

Dr. Joe Haraszti -- an L.A. psychiatrist -- tells us, "Animal data suggest that salvia is not addictive. But people will try it once and since it's such an intense and unpleasant experience that they will not want to do it again."

The battle over salvia is raging in the scientific community. Currently, it's legal in most U.S. states ... including California.

Salvia was recently banned in our city...I wouldn't recommend smoking it. My friends have lots of bad stories...usually people falling over and hitting the ground or getting up and running into a wall or thinking they're dead. Not a lot of good stories.

Drug Enforcement ADMINISTRATION, not Agency. Duh.

McDonald's is a gateway to lard-assy-ness. Is the government going to ban that too?

The Dave

I smoked this stuff once, just one little pull and had such a strong, hallucinogenic, terrifying trip that I'd never smoke it again. Makes LSD seem like coffee. It only lasts 5 minutes or so but you are literally in a different world. Very scary.

I've done salvia before. Scariest moment of my life, I thought I was stuck in a time loop for eternity. Genuinely convinced, could not remember I smoked salvia. Othwer people have a really good time though on it, like Miley apparently.

Is this the same thing as K 2? I hope she becomes a responsible adult.

Tried weak salvia once and hardly felt a thing. Tried the strongest stuff available the next time and truly thought I'd died...consciously just wanted to snap out of it but couldn't. One of the worst experiences ever. Love me some dank though!

What is wrong with Miley Cyrus. She has so many young children and teenagers looking up to her as a role model. AI have a very impressionable granddaughter and I'm sure if she found out about this incident it would upset her very much. what is Miley Cyrus going to try next?

I believe cigarettes are a gateway drug. A lot of kids try smoking first. What if a kid never tries cigarettes? There is more of a chance he or she will not try anything else. Why would Miley have to do this? She is successful? She is loved by millions. What is going on in her heart that she has to get high?

Way to buy into all the hype. Oh pot is a gateway drug to doing harder ones!! BS many people smoke pot but wouldn't touch coke or heroin or any of the other hard drugs. Pot got the bum rap from a bunch of politicians trying to take focus off their real mistakes and put it onto this so called war on drugs. Now its got so much financial ties for local, county, state, and federal agency's that its no longer about marijuana but billions of dollars in funding and countless jobs dedicated to the most dangerous drug of all...Marijuana LOL. Look at its classification...its a stage 1 drug making it so dangerous that there is no justification for it at all. Yet cocaine is a less dangerous drug according to the federal listing. So to buy into all the hype that pot is a gateway a less dangerous drug?!?!?!?!? Just goes to show how crazy that whole argument is.

But onto Salvia...oh no people derive pleasure out of it so it must be banned like marijuana!! Give it time and the feds will find a way to do it. Reality is though that most people that try Salvia do not really like it. It is very strong effect much stronger than pot ever could be. But it is very short duration. Sure some people like it but most people don't enjoy it. But seeing we are in a backward country that believes Marijuana is more dangerous than cocaine or heroin...yea they will ban Salvia as well soon enough. Idoitocracy at its best...

Not sure how a herb that causes "hallucinogenic effects" as well as "blurred realities" could possibly be used medically to treat someone with schizophrenia!! Sounds very counter-productive to me.

Salvia is a new drug that, so far, researchers have found is safe and has does no significant damage to the user.
