Teena Marie Death -- No Illegal Drugs Found

12/27/2010 1:45 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

No illegal drugs were found at the home where singer Teena Marie's body was discovered yesterday ... law enforcement sources tell TMZ.

Teena Marie Dead
We're told officials searched Teena's home in Pasadena , CA -- but only found some herbal medication -- and we're not talking marijuana.

We're told an autopsy and toxicology tests will be performed on her body later this week -- but so far, officials are leaning towards the theory that she died of natural causes.

As we previously reported, Teena -- once considered Rick James' protégée -- suffered a grand mal seizure just one month ago.

It's really sad to lose such a talent so prematurely. And make no mistake about it: Teena Marie was still recording, still performing, and she still sounded fabulous. The fact that radio considered her yesterday's news didn't change that fact. Just last year (2009) she put out an album called "Congo Square," and if you listen to samples on Amazon, you can see that she had much more talent than most of today's pre-packaged, over-produced pop tarts.

Those who did not know her or her musical genius should probably refrain from commenting on articles about her death. Or perhaps you may want to google the name or look it up on YouTube. In the meantime, here's a little primer from Wikipedia:
Teena Marie (March 5, 1956 – December 26, 2010) was an American singer, songwriter and producer. Marie, nicknamed Lady Tee, (sometimes spelled Lady T), was a protégée of funk legend Rick James, and was notable as one of the few successful white performers of R&B. She played rhythm guitar, keyboards and congas. She also wrote, produced, sang and arranged virtually all of her songs since her 1980 release, Irons in the Fire, which she said was her favorite album. She had a daughter, Alia Rose, who, as of 2009, sang under the name Rose LeBeau. Marie died of natural causes on Sunday, December 26, 2010, at home in Pasadena, California. As a child, she had an acting role on The Beverly Hillbillies, credited as Tina Marie Brockert. She also sang at the wedding of actor Jerry Lewis' son when she was 10 years old. She signed with Motown records in 1976, one of the few white artists to do so. In 1982, Marie got into a heated legal battle with Motown records over her contract and disagreements about releasing her new material. The scuffle resulted in "The Brockert Initiative" [aka the TEENA MARIE LAW], which makes it illegal for a record company to keep an artist under contract without releasing new material for that artist. In such instances, artists are able to sign and release with another label instead of being held back by an unsupportive one. She had 13 studio albums.

Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera paled in comparison to Teena Marie's extraordinary voice. She did not achieve their notoriety, but Teena Marie's talent was transcendent. Those of us who were privileged to hear her artistry were blessed.

Teena was the best!! She will live on in my heart as well as many others. She never received the accolades that she deserved. She was simply the greatest singer that I ever saw sing. I was blessed to see her and Rick James two weeks before he died.
