Dire Straits -- Classic Song Ruled Offensive in Canada

1/13/2011 2:00 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

26 years after the Dire Straits classic hit "Money for Nothing" first hit the airwaves ... the song has been ruled "too offensive" to be broadcast on Canadian radio ... because of a homophobic lyric.

The issue first arose last year, after someone filed a complaint explaining that the song contained the homophobic F-word ... three different times.

The Canadian Broadcast Standards Council ruled that the word is indeed offensive -- and ordered radio stations to use an edited version of the song.

The CBSC explained that societal values have "shifted" since the song debuted ... and "the broadcast of the song in 2010 must reflect those values, rather than those of 1985."

As a Canadian I like the majority of people in this country are offended by this ruling. Not a court ruling but an independent body that governs radio. To make matters worse there was one complaint!! From some guy in Newfoundland. Who was listening to the radio at a little after 9PM last February and complained. One guy!! Most radio stations this morning that discussed this on air this morning were bombarded with calls of protest over this ruling by a bunch of pinheads.

Oh Canada?? Here on our stations in the good old US of A we censor songs constantly.. for instance if song says God Damn... the God is bleeped out, that Nickleback(??) song about having your 'drug dealer on speed dial' .. the word 'Drug' is blocked out... so good old America is all about censoring as well.

I take exception to many rap lyrics, rock lyrics, poetry, art.....
But I am not arrogant enough to think I can force an artist to censor his work.
If you don't like the message, let it be, walk away, write your own response.
If I wanted to be told how to live, I would move to China.

WhyNot #64 .. really did you really just say "Since when does a person's sexual orientation give them more power than heterosexuals? " LOL... my god your stupidity is just, well funny as hell but also pretty pathetic. Not sure what rock you live under but 'heterosexuals' are constantly talking about who, how, where and what they f, u. ck ...boobs and ass flood our TV's and the internet, straight kissing and sex on tv in the norm, you my sick little friend are not the victim here so stop your whining and please drag your little homophobic butt back under your rock before you embarrass yourself further.

Hey you presumptuous "Canada sucks" air heads, don't go dissing all Canada because of this. It so happens that comment boards on the major Canadian news sites are absolutely brimming with postings opposed to this decision. Fact is, the compliant that started all this came from ONE person and was endorsed by an snobby ivory-tower committee of bureaucratic busy-bodies that obviously has some things to learn about the real world.

#13 - I find it hard to believe that ashley macisaac would be posting on TMZ, but if you are who you say you are, good for you as I agree with your comments. There are some of us who still recognize you!
And not all Canadians feel this way, so it's not fair to point a finger at an entire country for the opinions of a few.
Nowadays no matter what you say is going to offend someone, no matter where you live

I am cracking up right now, reading these responses.

ahhh, where to begin....

1. it wasn't the CRTC (government) that was involved, it was the CBSC.
2. The CBSC is not a government body, it is a council made up of.... get this.... RADIO BROADCASTERS.
3. the FCC does far more censorship in the USA then is done on Canadian airways
4. The issue was 1 complaint, against 1 radio station in Newfoundland. Don't blame the french (this time).
5. The song - Money for Nuthin has played for years with the substitution of the word "mother" for the word "fa.gg.ot"
6. Canadians are just as pi.ssed off at this ruling as everyone else is, so bashing Canadians is pretty stupid.

Music is an expression of free speech. Lenny Bruce shouldn't have been censored, and neither should other literary works.

I am Canadian and believe me we are all as perplexed as everyone else. One person is offended and our lovely Canadian Broadcasting Standards Council decides it has to go. It's not Canada that sucks. It's the CBSC.

I am Canadian and I am disgusted about this! The gov't here is banning everything, from plastic bags, lawn pesticides, Christmas carols and pageants in schools and stores, trying to ban tanning beds, now banning songs and words too! This politically-correct crap has gone way too far! This country has become a Big Brother fascist censorship police-state dictatorship where minority special-interest groups have special rights that trump the freedom of the majority! This country SUCKS!

To Ashley McIsaac.. You rock!!

As for ppl who think Canadians agree with it,well, talk about being as closed minded as the idiots who ruled against the song..
Having a retard right wing drone as our Prime minister lead our country to such ****ty decisions.
Funny fact to those who say us french are stupid;
Only english speaking radio stations are bound by the new ruling!
On French speaking stations we have NO censoring.
Free speech baby!
And about rap music.. Well english stations either don't play them or censor the crap outta them.
Yep,only in Canada.
But then again,we don't have shootings or buildings being blown up with daycares in em every two years.
Food for thought,
If you are the thinking kind of course :P
