Dire Straits -- Classic Song Ruled Offensive in Canada

1/13/2011 2:00 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

26 years after the Dire Straits classic hit "Money for Nothing" first hit the airwaves ... the song has been ruled "too offensive" to be broadcast on Canadian radio ... because of a homophobic lyric.

The issue first arose last year, after someone filed a complaint explaining that the song contained the homophobic F-word ... three different times.

The Canadian Broadcast Standards Council ruled that the word is indeed offensive -- and ordered radio stations to use an edited version of the song.

The CBSC explained that societal values have "shifted" since the song debuted ... and "the broadcast of the song in 2010 must reflect those values, rather than those of 1985."

In George Orwell's novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, there was a term called "Newspeak," Newspeak was the new language of a totalitarian regime of the novel's Party, whose aim is to make any alternative thinking a "thoughtcrime" it was based on English but has a greatly reduced and simplified vocabulary and grammar which decreased continually as a way to control the populous. Sound familiar? Unfortunately, life is slowing intimating art in this case, with frightening results.

Sorry, if "Money for Nothing" by Dire Straits, a song that's been on Canadian radio for almost three decades, offends you to the point where it's now being censored - perhaps you should take a closer listen to what the song is actually about. It's song that captures a conversation between to closed minded people, obviously you are the third.

Hey Kate - They must be hung up on the word itself. They can't ban phrases because of the whole freedom of speech thing. They can, however censor words. What I'm wondering is why not just edit the word in question like they do with most music that has "naughty words" in it? Why stop playing the entire song? It's the theme song to one the best summers evah!! Obviously someone in the CBSC(oops I had to use caps again, hope you're not offended. wink-wink) takes extra, closeted exception to that particular word. Either that or someone at the CBSC(sorry again) is going for their Lean Six Sigma greenbelt and needed a project!

Some western nations like the US and now Canada have gone backward. This has never been an issue in more conservative societies like the Asia/Pacific then and even now.

Come on, IT'S JUST A SONG!!!

As a world traveler, I run into Canadians all the time and I have to tell you, those that I have met have been rude, nasty and totally, 100% critical of everything the U.S. does, says, thinks, or feels. They say our drug laws are stupid, we are ignorant, arrogant, close minded etc., etc. And they aren't playing a song because it's "offensive"? Now who needs to get real, Canada? Now who needs to "grow up", now who needs to "get with the times". Looks like the perfect country of Canada needs to learn how to run their own country before they knock the way we run ours, eh???

I am Canadian and I am disgusted about this! The gov't here is banning everything, from plastic bags, lawn pesticides, Christmas carols and pageants in schools and stores, trying to ban tanning beds, now banning songs and words too! This politically-correct crap has gone way too far! This country has become a Big Brother fascist censorship police-state dictatorship where minority special-interest groups have special rights that trump the freedom of the majority! This country SUCKS!

I echo your remarks and agree, only substitute "The United States" in place of "Canada".

I laugh at you Americans. You are all so rude and arrogant it's discusting! No wonder the entire world hates your country. You can't say that about us can you? Canada is loved by the world. Perhaps you Americans can learn from your northern neighbour. Treat others like you wish to be treated yourself!

Censorship of the arts used to be considered deplorable but now we have the PC POLICE!!!! to tell us what we should and shouldn't listen to. And, as we ALL know, THEY KNOW BEST!!!!! :-\

Hey! Ashley MacIssac reads TMZ ! Awesome! Not sure why that the CBSC has an issue with this song, because we play every other song that has " Offensive" lyrics- as long as TV and radio play a percentage of stuff that's Canadian in some form we'll hear everything that everyone in the U.S. listens too. Take off, eh!
